About the Department

The department of History started functioning since the commencement of our College in 1944. From a very humble beginning in 1944, today it is academically one of the richest Department of the college including both Post Graduate and Under Graduate (Honours & Pass) sections. The latest feather in the cap of the Department is the introduction of Regular Post Graduate Course in 2003. The Post Graduate Section has received academic autonomy in 2017 which is another milestone achieved by the department. Here, at our department, we have an excellent and enriched Departmental Library which is loaded with books on various aspects of History as well as with a great number of journals, different Newspapers and Magazines with access to numerous online resources. We have very dedicated and committed faculty members who always strive to enrich themselves by attending national and international conferences, presenting papers, and attending various workshops. Faculty members are proficient in using Power Point Presentation to improve teaching methodology and to develop creative and innovative teaching style.

The Department also organizes national level Seminar with international delegation funded by different bodies like UGC, ICSR and ICHR for the academic enrichment of this region. The faculties are keen on initiating research and a number of minor projects. Department every year also conducts Departmental Educational Tour to improve the practical knowledge in Historical and Social research field. Guest speakers with particular expertise are invited, whenever necessary, to deliver lectures on specialized topics.

Aims:

The Department of History, Malda College started its voyage in 1944 and since 2003, we have been continuing our regular postgraduate course. Historically, Malda (Gour) was an ancient capital of Bengal, and presently it is an underdeveloped district of West Bengal. Demographically, it is a minority based district where the percentage of the tribal population is significant. In this socio-economic and historical perspective, we are continuing our solemn responsibility to improve the scope and quality of the higher education and research. At the same time, the objective of the department is to motivate the students for higher learning, and we are glad to say that our many students are academically leading the different academic and research institutes of the country. Therefore, presently the department is one of the leading research and learning Institute of the northern Bengal.
