The HISTORY in @history frog:
Mrs. Nakatsuka loves history. She also loves First Avenue Middle School where she has taught history, mainly U.S. History, since 1990. She loves attending history seminars and conferences, learning about history, visiting the places where history took place and bringing all the knowledge and insight gained back to her classroom to make history come alive for her students.
The FROG in @historyfrog
Mrs. Nakatsuka’s love for cartoon frogs (not real frogs) started when her mother bought her a “rainy day” calendar which contained various activities, including instructions on how to draw a frog. She quickly learned how to draw a frog; this also fit well with her love for the color green.

When Mrs. Nakatsuka began teaching at First Avenue Middle School, in the Arcadia Unified School District in 1990, she quickly adopted Sanrio’s frog, Keroppi Hasunoue, as her mascot. Keroppi had been “born” in 1987, just in time to be celebrated in her classroom. Inspired by Keroppi and her love of frogs, she coined the slogan “History is Un-FROG-gettable,” created “frog-dollars,” named student groups “lily pads,” and even established a History Frog Hall of Fame containing student artwork of famous US History Frogs, including Benjamin Frog-lin, George Washington Frog and many more! When Mrs. Nakatsuka joined Twitter as @historyfrog, the frog puns continued to develop as she tweeted out fun #FrogtasticFriday, #TotallyTerribitThursday and all things #Frogtastic in her history classroom.
Mrs. Nakatsuka’s desire to share the joys of history and her un-FROG-gettable history classroom with students, friends, and with fellow educators at conferences and beyond, prompted her to design, together with her Toadily Talented brother, her own History Frog. She began designing stickers, memo pads, as well as Frog Merch (thanks to Desiree Alvarez --Frogtastic former First Avenue parent--of Pasadena Promos printing and donating Frog Merch to benefit Mrs. Nakatsuka's history classroom and #HistoryTadpoles (aka students).
