- The Indians also started resenting British officials due to the social and religious discrimination by the British on the basis their views of the Indians as racially inferior and culturally backward and their belief that God had created the white men to civilize the Indians
- Reforms introduced by the British such as abolition of ‘sati’, legalization of widow remarriage and extension of western education to women were looked upon as examples of interference of the British in the social customs of the country.
