Cal State LA's Historical Database of Climate Adapted Agriculture aims to promote urban food production by uncovering the 300-year old history of agriculture in the Los Angeles region. We are creating a historical database centered on two main inventories: 1) A record of edible and medicinal plants that have thrived continuously in the Los Angeles basin for the last 300 years; 2) A record of sustainable agricultural practices that have evolved in the Southern California region. These include water conservation, seed harvesting, canopy planting and multi-cropping, techniques that maximize production without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, and the use of organic methods to promote soil health. The database will be built in successive stages and will include the history of pre-colonial indigenous food production, the agricultural practices of the San Gabriel mission, and homesteading and small urban farming as that occurred continuously in the period under survey. In the last phase, we will document the revival of urban agriculture from the 1980s to the present. We invite you to accompany us on this journey through the rich agricultural past of Los Angeles.
