About us

Materials Processing Science Laboratory is jointly operated with Prof. Naoto Ohtake. Hirata Laboratory is a new research laboratory established in 2024 with the mission of promoting medical device creation based on materials engineering. We are particularly focused on developing synthesis techniques and analysis methods for nanomaterials such as Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) films, which protect machinery from wear, and graphene, which exhibits interesting properties different from conventional materials. In an era where the advancement of nanotechnology and carbon neutrality are becoming benchmarks for technological development, we contribute to the advancement of nanotechnology and aim to solve environmental and energy issues by developing innovative synthesis techniques for nanomaterials and conducting research in materials science that deals with surface and interfacial phenomena. In the early stages of our new laboratory's history, we are challenging ourselves with a "grand" and "ambitious" endeavor to innovate in the science that humanity has created over centuries. We welcome doctoral program applicants from not only our mechanical engineering department but also other disciplines and universities. Please feel free to contact us.
