Thank you for considering a referral to our outpatient Gastroenterology and Liver Clinics at Highland Hospital. Please read this section to understand more about referring patients to our outpatient GI/Liver clinic service.
What kinds of patients can be referred?
Our group has comfort and expertise in managing full spectrum general gastroenterology and hepatology conditions. Please note that we do not offer liver transplant services or GI motility procedures, and we currently do not offer certain types of advanced interventional endoscopy (ie Endoscopic Ultrasound). However, we are happy to evaluate these biliary/transplant patients for referral to local centers of excellence at UCSF, CPMC, or Stanford.
How do I make referrals?
We receive all referrals through our electronic medical record system Epic. Alameda Health System providers can submit referrals through the AHS' Epic "E-Consult" system. Community partners who work in the Epic EMR should submit through their local Epic system's Epic Care link. Those community partners without access to Epic should fax referrals to 510-437-5180. Please make the fax to "GI Services", include all patient demographic/contact data, the clinical history, and the clinical question to be answered.
What happens to my referral after I submit?
Referrals to our service are received in the our group's E-consult queue. This queue is managed on a regular basis and we strive to act on every referral within 72 hours of receipt. Referral actions are generally of 3 types:
Managed by e-consultation only without patient visit to GI/Liver Clinic.
Managed by e-consultation leading to patient visit to GI/Liver Clinic.
Managed by direct to scheduling of patient for a GI/Liver Clinic visit. This will either be a tele-visit or in-person visit, as determined by both the patient and the provider.
