As part of my Zoology studies, many years ago, I had to make technically accurate, free-hand drawings of such things as animal skeletons, insect wing veins and various invertebrates.
Black oil paint used thinly, rather like ink, and applied with a nib and a fine brush. A tortillon was used to achieve the softer, grey tones. Lines of masking fluid were used to get the whiskers effect.
