If you've done any research at all, you probably know already that Hawaii is expensive- especially housing. Military families have three main options when it comes to finding a place to live: base housing, renting off base, or buying. The following information is based on personal expereince and is not professional advice. Here's what we think you need to know to compare your options!
1.) Base Housing: Each branch has their own housing (excluding Space Force, which falls under Air Force housing). Air Force housing is all located on Hickam AFB and is truly "on-base". Navy housing for enlisted service members and their families is mostly outside the gates, and the communities are sprinkled around the greater Aiea/Salt Lake/Pearl City area. Army housing is at Schofield and Marine Corps housing is at Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH). For most people, living on base is about cost savings. Due to the high cost of electricity and other utilities in Hawaii, which often exceed BAH, many families choose to live on base. Each neighborhood is quite different, which will be discussed in more detail below. Base housing is hands down the best value for square footage you will find anywhere on island, but many of these houses are still considered somewhat small by mainland standards. NOTE! Any branch can apply for any other base's housing. You do not need to belong to the branch to apply for that branch's housing.
2.) Renting Off Base: Military families living off base tend to live in Kapolei, Ewa Beach and Honolulu. It is possible to find places to rent that are below BAH, but be mindful of the cost of utilities and request examples of the utility bills at places you tour.
3.) Buying Off Base: If you are interested in making Hawaii your home long term, buying may be an option you'd like to consider. Keep in mind high HOA and condo fees which may surprise you, and the aforementioned utility bills.
Hale Na Koa: Historic and Newer Homes, lots of trees and is easily walkable to the comissary, AAFES and Hickam Channel.
Onizuka Village: Close to commissary and AAFES, large park in center with dog park, tennis court and playground.
Earhart Village: Close to Shopette/Gas Station, Chapel, Hickam Arts and Crafts Center.
