Teaching and Mentoring

"Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself." - John Dewey

One of my most favorite TED Talks on Teaching by Joe Ruhl. He presently teaches Biology, Genetics, and Science Research courses at Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Indiana.

My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that education is a transformative process that goes beyond the mere transmission of knowledge. I strive to create an inclusive, engaging, and dynamic learning environment that encourages students to critically examine concepts and apply their learning to real-world challenges. In my role as a graduate teaching assistant and later as a lecturer, I have learned the importance of adaptability and relevance in curriculum design. I believe in constantly updating course content to reflect modern technological developments and industry trends. This ensures that students are not only well-versed with theoretical concepts, but also equipped with the practical skills needed to excel in their chosen fields.

Active learning is central to my teaching approach. I foster this by facilitating classroom discussions, group activities, and problem-solving exercises, believing that these participatory methods stimulate critical thinking and reinforce understanding. Moreover, I value the diversity of thought that students bring to the table and encourage them to learn from each other. Assessment, in my view, is not just a tool for grading, but an opportunity for feedback and improvement. I prioritize clear and constructive feedback, and work closely with students to identify areas of struggle and devise strategies for overcoming these challenges. Collaboration is another cornerstone of my teaching philosophy. As a teaching assistant, I have collaborated extensively with lead instructors to ensure course consistency, alignment, and quality. I also believe in collaborating with students, treating them as partners in the learning process.

Finally, I view teaching as a continuous learning journey. I am committed to reflecting on my teaching practices, seeking feedback, and continuously enhancing my skills. I am driven by the profound satisfaction that comes from seeing my students grow, and the knowledge that I am contributing to their academic and professional success.
