Heterodox at UVA is made up of more than 60 faculty members and administrators. The co-chairs of HxA at UVA will grow our chapter through regular meetings with featured speakers presenting on topics related to issues facing higher education. We also sponsor and co-sponsor events with organizations that align with the HxA Way. One does not have to be a member to attend our events -- please join our email list to learn of upcoming activities you might enjoy.
In line with the mission of HxA, we are motivated by a desire to improve the quality of research and education at UVA by increasing open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement among faculty, students, and administrators. Our Heterodox at UVA community is fairly balanced between liberal, conservative, and independent thinkers. It costs nothing to join our chapter, and there are no dues to pay.
Before being named a HxA Campus Community, we held several “Heterodox Happy Hours” in collaboration with Think Again @ UVA and The Blue Ridge Center, which were founded to help UVA students thrive through our commitment to free speech, viewpoint diversity, intellectual humility, and critical thinking.
Attendees of those gatherings formed the nucleus of our new campus community at UVA and we hope to recruit more broadly among faculty— with a longer term goal of establishing a student component over the next year or so.
