Austin Animal Center

Discussing about animal shelters, Austin Animal Center is a municipal shelter of the City of Austin, which is the largest no-kill animal shelter in the United States.
Animals of all species who need shelter regardless of their health, age, condition or breed, are welcome here.
The center is responsible for caring for and sheltering over 18,000 animals per year.
Goal of this shelter is to provide these animals with homes through adoption, foster care, or rescue groups.

Austin Animal Center Intakes

Austin Animal Center started their intake on October 1st 2013 and is open for intake till date. Animals are taken into the shelter after they have been found or rescued or have been left in the shelter by past owners.

The status at arrival of these animals is taken as the 'Intake' parameter in the Austin Animal center database which can be given to the future owner and to maintain the health of these animals.

Here in the Austin Animal center, it was found that majority of the animals were in normal condition when they were being taken into the shelter.

After intake, these animals are given a unique Animal ID each which can be used to track the details of each.

Most of the animals which have been taken into the shelter were dogs and cats, where the dogs were greater in number. Livestock has also been given shelter in Austin Animal center where they were the least in number. More number of birds were taken into the shelter compared to livestock. Although they have intake of other animals.

The condition of all the animals is examined and it represents the 'status' of the animal. Event the gender details are noted down upon intake so as to provide information about the animal whether they were spayed or neutered. 57% of livestock in the shelter were seen to be intact females as they were used for food production in farms or industries. This helps the persons decide whether to get the animal spayed or neutered in future.

Intake of strays is very high in the shelter, which is not even comparable to the other categories like wildlife. Few pet animal were surrendered by owners due to as they didn't want to spend on feeding and grooming of their pets or due to their bad health conditions and not wanting to spend money for medication and treatment.
