The Gambia is a small West African country, approximately 11,300 square kilometers in size, making it the smallest nation on mainland Africa. It is uniquely shaped, stretching about 480 kilometers inland while being only 25 to 50 kilometers wide, and is entirely surrounded by Senegal except for its western coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. The Gambia River flows through the country's length, providing a vital resource for its people. (1)

The climate is tropical, featuring a hot, rainy season from June to November and a cooler, dry season from November to May. Many Gambians are employed in agriculture, focusing on crops like peanuts (groundnuts), millet, and sorghum. Fishing is also a significant industry. Tourism plays a vital role in the economy, with visitors attracted to the country's beautiful beaches and diverse wildlife. (2)
Known as "the smiling coast of Africa," The Gambia is renowned for its friendly and welcoming people. Historically, it was colonized by the British during the 19th century and gained independence on February 18, 1965. In 2017, after more than two decades under a repressive regime, Gambians democratically elected their leadership, reflecting their commitment to integrity and self-determination. (3)
The Gambia is susceptible to natural disasters such as droughts and floods, which can significantly impact the nation's agriculture and infrastructure, and pests like mosquitos maintain the threat of diseases like malaria for the most financially vulnerable. (4) Its diverse fauna includes animals such as hyenas, monkeys, crocodiles, and various bird species inhabiting its fields and forests. (5)
