An estimated 1.7% of sexual minority adults identify as asexual, according to a recent study by the Williams Institute.
Asexuality can be a difficult sexuality to grasp as people can not connect with it. Unlike other sexualities, being able to connect through the sexual nature, asexuality is the lack of or very little sexual attraction. As an asexual person, the easiest way I explain it as: Imagine someone you don't like, you are just not attracted to at all. That is what most Asexual people feel about all people.
The flag consists of four horizontal stripes: black, grey, white, and purple from top to bottom. The black stripe represents asexuality, the grey stripe representing the grey-area between sexual and asexual, the white stripe sexuality, and the purple stripe community.
Many assume that if a person is Asexual, they must also be Aromantic. Aromantic is when a person has little to no romantic attraction. Although an Asexual person can be Aromantic, they are not mutually exclusive. A struggle for Asexuality is the belief that an Asexual person can't have/want relationships.
Another struggle is representation. Even though 1.7% or ~ 75 million people are asexual there is little to no Asexual representation. When there is representation it can be a negative light featuring Asexuality as a disease or as abstinence or celibacy.
