Massachusetts Marine Educators and co-sponsors invite students in grades K-12 to participate in the 2020 Marine Art Contest. The theme is “Illustrating the Marine Biodiversity of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.” Contest sponsors encourage students to consider composing pieces that show predator-prey relationships or depict species diversity in a habitat setting. Week 1
Topic: Sponges
Objectives: (What you should be able to do after studying!)
Describe the basic anatomy of a sponge. (Including: osculum, choanocytes (collar cells), ostia (pores), amoebocytes, spicules)
Identify 3 different types of sponge and distinguish between them based on their unique characteristics.
Describe how sponges get food. (They are animals!)
Predict how sponges get rid of waste.
Explain sponge reproduction and model the process.

Week 2
Topic: Cnidarians (Jellyfish, Coral, Sea Anemones, and Hydroids)
Objectives: (What you should be able to do after studying!)
Differentiate the different classes of cnidarians (Hydrozoa, Scyphozoa, Cubozoa, and Anthozoa)
Identify and describe the anatomical features of the various cnidarians and relate them to their function.
Model the life-cycle of a typical jellyfish, and describe each stage.
Explain how the different classes of cnidarians complete their life functions (eating, reproduction, movement, sensitivity and reactivity to environment, waste removal) and describe how they differ.
