Excellence in communication is a key quality in Collaborative School Leadership. I am a change manager who honours all voices and always looks to develop collaborative relationships that build capacity.
Linked below is an email I sent to our OSSLT Preparation Team, comprised of school leaders in Special Education, Guidance, Student Success, Office Admin, Library as well as our LAN Tech Specialist. It is an action summary of several planning meetings where all voices were heard and many great ideas were presented by various members of the team.
In both my previous role as a Head of Guidance, Career education and Co-op and in my current role as Vice Principal, I work hard to engage staff in thinking critically about student achievement and wellbeing.
As a student mental health advocate, I engage in leading professional development for staff around issues affecting student well being. Here is a brief presentation designed to build understanding and capacity to support student mental health.
School Effectiveness Planning is key to implementing the Near North District School Board's Mission, Vision, and Values. The Board's Key Goals of literacy, numeracy, equity and wellbeing must be implemented at the school level using the School Effectiveness Planning Framework. As a school Leader, I have extensive experience using the Framework to align school planning with Board and Ministry goals.
I have proven experience in the 4 strategic Priorities in the NNDSB Multi-Year Strategic Plan.
I value and demonstrate:
Excellence in Teaching and Learning - Safe, Supportive, Student Centred, Data Driven
Excellence in Communication - Transparent, Accurate, Reliable
Excellence in Relationships - Respectful, Equitable, Valued, Diverse
Excellence in Innovation - Progressive, Growth Oriented, 21 Century Competencies
The Board Improvement Plan (BIPSAWB) is an expression of NNDSB's Multi-year Strategic Plan. It elaborates on the Board's overarching goal of Student Achievement and Wellbeing. As a Principal, I manage important points along this strategic continuum and ensure that the School Improvement Plan (SIPSAWB) and the Department Improvement Plans (DIPSAWB) align with the Board's Core Purpose. As a school leader and as a member of our Family of Schools Steering Committee, I currently engage in data driven improvement planning in support of Ministry and Board Goals. Below is an excerpt from a Peel District School Board Memo. This planning memo has formed the basis of much of our dialogue in our Family of Schools this year as we work together to facilitate and share best practices in School Improvement planning that meets my current Board's goals.
Excerpt From PDSB Memo: Re: School Improvement and Equity Plan 2021-2022
Dear Vice Principals and Principals The purpose of this memo is to provide you with an overview and update of the implementation for upcoming School Improvement and Equity Planning (SIEP) process. Recently, the Ministry of Education released plans for the new Board Improvement and Equity Plan (BIEP), which will establish provincial education priorities, goals and performance indicators to support continuous quality improvement as part of Board strategic planning. The BIEP is a demographic data-driven tool designed to capture the experiences and outcomes of Black and Indigenous students, and other racialized groups of students, students with disabilities and/or special education needs (non-gifted), 2SLGBTQ+ students, and students from low-income households. In Peel, the School Improvement and Equity Planning process, formerly known as School Success Planning, will resume with a renewed focus on supporting the achievement, human rights, well-being and dignity of all students, with a particular focus on Black, Indigenous and students who have been historically marginalized by the system.
The steps for SIEP mirror the well-known instructional/learning cycle and the System Improvement Learning
Cycle (SILC) as promoted by the Ministry of Education and the Board Improvement planning process:
Step 1 - Context Setting and Data Review
Step 2 - Goal Setting and Action Planning
Step 3 - Monitoring for Improvement
Step 4 - Reflection and Planning Next Steps
Human Rights and Equity work are my passion. I have an extensive history of equity work within my current board in areas of community mental health, LGBTQ++, newcomer and refugee support programs, Special Education and accessibility, and anti-oppressive practices in support of racialized and indigenous youth. I am restorative practices trained and use my equity mindset to facilitate change. I have a demonstrated expertise in developing strong community partnerships in support of student and community safety, equity, and wellbeing. I am dedicated to building student capacity for cultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect. I feel we have a lot to learn from our youth and I value student voices in school equity planning.
