AI, artificial intelligence, is supposed to be something 'helpful', well it needs to be that and not get convoluted. At the end of the day, real people are involved, in developing AI, and of course who read AI. What you put in can result in what you put out.
To my dismay, and many others, it has been found in the news recently that over the past year 2024, especially on the East Coast of the USA, there has been a markedly high number of fatalities where the victim, usually female, has been left in a shallow grave or something similar to it.
The United States of America has a lot to be grateful for. Many of us wake up every morning to the sights and choices of food to eat, roads to drive on, roads unobstructed by soldiers at checkpoints every few miles that randomly arrest you over even false allegations of political views. There are street lamps, grocery stores to go to, schools, theaters, and hospitals. Of course there is still further to go.
In some ways, America has lived out a fairy tale.

The Milton, or any severe tornado/hurricane/weather system path- if you are any where near it, take extra precautions to stay safe.
The concept is similar to fighting forest fires of extreme heat, there are flames that can be seen by the eye, and there are those that might not be seen readily, but both are dangerous and can burn.
Compounding the recent storm Helene, precautions are being taken against Milton. Florida athorities are predicting that Milton has at least twice the capacity as Helene, such as in feet of water.
(If there have been orders to evacuate, it is wise to abide by them.)

How and why does or did this happen?

Amounts of about 20 political prisoners is ordinarily enough for global news, regardless of where it is, and who is whose side in the political issues.
Are there other lenses that count the individuals and the magnitude? Yes. Some say over 1,000. For example CECC.gov.
Discomfort in the form of low activity protests, generally, groups of people banded together with large banners, voicing that they should be the one on the beach, instead of what might be what comprises a tourist beach overcrowding dilemma.

A few years ago I wrote or put in a film that the ideal method for the presentation global news, with the help of technology, would eventually be a globe or 3d sort of map with the news stories corresponding to each location, that way obtaining the bird's eye view of it all, helping understanding etc., is more easily attainable.

Before I forget, lest mistaken given reading materials were scant, as 'Juneteenth' approaches, there were some issues when deciding or selecting Galveston (TX) as the area to 'muster out' a selected group [of Civil War soldiers] (among others) through Galveston, back in the 1860s.
Sadly, it almost did not make national news, probably due to the high quantity of other news about misfortunes, crime, and violence. 18 persons, estimated were shot, and had browsing news not been in the State it occured, might not ever have seen it. It's one of the biggest mass shootings in the past 20 years.

What the exact status is this very second may not be clear in this post, however, news reports in the past few days have indicated rioting and clashing to a high intensity level.
The rioting may have been in connection to electoral reform emanating from France. (The gist of what some media provides is the concern and hence rioting has to do with indigenous Kanaks voice might not be as weighted in the system if proposed reforms materialize.)
France has declared a State of Emergency.
The situations are so bad and sinister, that I really do not want to type the words about them. But the stories may better be told, for prevention purposes.
Right now there might be too many storm catastrophes to count up on one news story. This effort will try to get a hold of them. It seems more storms are unravelling on imminent basis.
Along the water line between New Orleans, Louisiana, and just north of Galveston, Texas (site popularly referenced in new Juneteenth celebrations), are spots of severe flooding.
Tornadoes have also been present recently in that general region of the south including Oklahoma.
