🌱 HCA 443: Capstone
Please note that this course is subject to minor changes and tweaks. I'll be updating it as the start of Spring term draws closer. However, the overall outcomes, delivery, and structure will be the same as that presented below.
This is the class where you put it all together! The capstone integrates the components of your curriculum into a culminating research-based presentation and paper or project. Throughout this term, you will build on the capstone research idea or project you developed during your brainstorm. I've crafted a variety of assignments throughout the term will help you build up to your final paper and presentation.
Prerequisites: HCA 409A & B and senior standing in the major.
At the completion of this course, you will be able to:
apply the information and material learned in previous classes and during your internship to inform the development of your capstone presentation and paper
evaluate and organize information from a variety of sources, including your own internship experience and peer-reviewed literature, to frame the significance and contribution of your capstone project
present the results of your capstone project in a professional, virtual setting
integrate your internship experience and capstone project with healthcare-related theories, concepts, and terminology through writing your final paper
There is a total of 500 points in this class, distributed among the following categories:

Overview: Your capstone paper should provide a detailed account of your practicum experience including an overview of your capstone project (or research question) and its significance, its relationship to the academic literature, results of the project and their significance, and finally a concluding discussion of how those results can inform future projects at your internship site and research.
Details: Your capstone paper should be approximately 10-15 pages, double-spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman font with standard 1’’ margins. It is due at the end of Week 10. It should have a “References” or “Works Cited” page at the end.

Example of a successful paper: Coming soon.
Overview: Presentation of your capstone project/research in Week 9 to your classmates, instructor, and other HCA faculty and students. We will plan for this happen live via two separate Zoom days/times. [We'll figure out the dates together as it gets closer.] You will present a brief overview of your internship to situate the development of your capstone project or research question, the significance and contribution of your project/research question to your internship site and to the healthcare-related academic literature, and conclude with main takeaways from the project.
Details: Your final presentation should be approximately 15-20 minutes and include a slide deck (for example: Google Slides, PowerPoint, Prezi, Keynote, etc). Your first slide should be a title slide and your last slide must include your references. A draft of your capstone presentation slides (or, a written outline) is due in Week 7. Your final presentation is due at the date/time of presentations in Week 9 (still to be determined).
