🍂 HCA 409A: Practicum A
This course will prepare you to integrate your HCA curriculum into a real-world working experience in a healthcare administration internship setting. We will review the outcomes from the HCA major and formulate a plan to integrate those outcomes into your internship location. This course will help you prepare for a profession in the healthcare setting and help you locate and obtain a practicum location.
This course is designed for remote delivery with synchronous class components. Synchronous learning is remote learning that is happening in real time.
That means that as a class we will occasionally meet over Zoom at least 3 times:
A Welcome/Ask Me Anything session
A review of writing professional documents session
Midterm check-in
Mock interview (individual synchronous Zoom meeting)
We may schedule additional class wide meetings, as needed. These live Zoom sessions will be scheduled based on everyone's availability. We'll figure those days/times out in the first week or two of class. If you're unable to attend, please let me know and I'll have you complete an alternative assignment.
The rest of the course material and activities will be completed remotely and asynchronously, meaning that you can do your work at different times as long as it is completed by the weekly deadlines.
At the completion of this course, you will be able to:
define the HCA program outcomes, and
relate them to a healthcare-related workplace setting
evaluate and create professional communications, both written and verbal, including a resume, personal statement or cover letter, and a professional interview
identify your finalized internship location
There are no required textbooks for this course. All readings and other materials will be available on Moodle.
There is a total of 500 points in this class, distributed among the following categories:
Moodle discussions 180 pts
Faculty presentations 100 pts
Mock interview 70 pts
Resume 50 pts
Cover letter 50 pts
Internship location 70 pts
Nothing! Take some time for a little rest and relaxation, if you can. Stay healthy and safe. I'll send you an email when our Moodle class page is live. At that point, you can log on and introduce yourselves in the first discussion. If you really want to get started this summer, start thinking about what kind of internship experience you'd like. Consider the following questions:
What modality do you feel comfortable with? Remote or in-person?
What skills are you interested in honing?
What type of healthcare environment would you like to 'test out'?
If you get that far, you might start compiling some potential sites that check these boxes
