The prompt for day 21 was another one I had no clue initially what to draw. If you look what I ended up with (bellow) , it was an astronaut stealling some kind of strange device from a tear in space-time while being chased by giant tenctacles Lovecraft style. But how do we get here...
#Inktober 2022, Day 21: Stealling time itself
When i looked online at art or images that reminded of heist, th most usual was something like the ones bellow. A very complex scene where somebody is getting away with something that was stolen. Ok.
So, my train of thought went "Valuable thing stolen - time is the mos valuable thing. But if time was kept somewhere to be stolen, in the first place,it would not be here. Somwhere 'out there'. And would be guarded. Very well guarded. Probably from the begining of time... But, by who? The Ancient Gods". So, all the main elements are there, but how do I start?
First, composition. I decided to use an image irradiating from the top left, more or less like the first two images.
Second, I needed a rift in space time
Third, I needed Lovecracftian tentacles
Fourth, I needed a retro-futurist astrounaut and, finally
I need something to represent time itself. Something magical maybe.
Knowing what I needed I went after references.
A few astronaut images, including some with a retro vibe.
Tentacles, lots of Lovecraftian tentacles reaching out.
Finally, an artifact to represent time itself.
Using pieces of many of those elements and distorting the in SketchBook, I made a collage that gave the overal idea of the scene I wanted.
Since I could change things around, this also allowed me to understand the scene needed more width than I originally thought.
It also made clear that to better position and choose the object that would represent time it should not be in front of the astronaut and the object I thought would look good, did not.
With the main parts of the scene in place (note that ecery part was drawn over black background), now it was just a matter of adding the final background and a few details to get to the final image.
Lightning was something that was better composed in this last fase and probably could be better, were not I in such a hurry.
But I was late, very late. Heist was supposed to be the 22th image and I could not finish until the 24th of october. So I was starting to lag behind, again...
