It started with an architectural experiment: "What if Gaudí was a brutalist disciple?" Frames of people running through surreal structures followed (ST46-50, 2024). Still just a vibe in the 60s/70s sci-fi movie style.
The story concept drew from classic sci-fi: Clarke's Diaspar in "The City and the Stars", Farmer's "Dayworld," Pohl's cryogenic use in "Age of Pussyfoot" where these technologies where a way to deal with time, scarcity and danger.
In Sanctuary I saw all the "Earth is not enought so we need to migrate to other planets" to mitigate human impact on Earth and thought: What if we just slept the problem away and who would be left awake?
My wife, a relentless critic, stopped me mid-pitch: "Did you write that? You should." First idea to earn her approval. So Sanctuary became my first long-form narrative experiment of 24.
Early versions had the guardian narrating in her own voice. It muddled the soundtrack (Rossinante's score is too good to cover). I learned: sometimes text, short videos, and music breathing together work better than wall-to-wall dialogue.
Originally called "Sanctuary 3000 A.D."—full pulp retro (Logan's Run fan here). Eventually simplified. Sometimes less is more, even for a world at the end.
