Community Improvement Project: Applying Operations to Rational Numbers
Click Here to download the teacher guide
In this Grade 7 instructional guide, students explore applying the four operations to rational numbers through three tasks connected to everyday consumer and community contexts.
Practice Task 1 (50 min) — Students design a custom trail mix recipe using required fractional amounts of nuts and dried fruit, then add, subtract, and compare quantities across two batches — one with nuts and one without
Practice Task 2 (55 min) — Students multiply, divide, and add decimals to compare four cell phone plans and determine the most cost-effective option based on specific usage scenarios, justifying their choice with calculations
End-of-Unit Performance Task (45–90 min) — Students are given a $5,000 budget to improve a community area of their choice — either a local playground or an environmental park — selecting from a list of equipment and services while applying all four operations to stay as close to the budget as possible without exceeding it

Traditional Hawaiian Food Farm Start Up: Algebraic Expressions and Equations
Click Here to download the teacher guide
In this Grade 7 performance assessment, students apply their understanding of algebraic expressions and equations to plan a traditional Hawaiian food farm start-up rooted in Hawaiʻi's food sovereignty movement.
End-of-Unit Performance Task (90 min) — Students are given land to start a farm and must meet a $10,000 annual profit goal while covering $1,200 in operating costs. They select at least three crops from a menu of traditional Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian options, identify known and unknown quantities, write and solve an equation or inequality modeling their crop combination, and explain their solution in writing. A 10% sales incentive applies to traditional Hawaiian food crops (kalo, ʻuala, maiʻa).

Note: An instructional guide with practice tasks is coming soon.
This Rich Math Tasks volume contains a collection of learner-centered mathematical challenges for students in grades 3-12. Everything you will find in this volume was designed by Hawaiʻi teachers for Hawaiʻi students as part of the ongoing, HIDOE-led Performance Assessment Development Initiative (PADI). These tasks have been thoughtfully crafted, piloted, and revised to serve as high-quality classroom-based tools that gauge student understanding and actively enhance learning and engagement.
This booklet is designed to be easy to print, either in its entirety or by selecting the pages of PDF you'd like to use. You can also find these tasks within the math instructional guides posted with their accompanying end-of-unit tasks under the "math" tab.
