In this Grade 5 Math instructional guide, students apply their knowledge related to multiplying fractions by whole numbers through three tasks connected to real-world contexts in cooking, community celebration, and event planning.
Practice Task 1 (50 min) — Students select a number of 5th-grade classes to feed and calculate the scaled-up ingredient amounts needed to bake cookies for all of them, showing their reasoning using equations, labels, and models
Practice Task 2 (70 min) — Students select a combination of culturally meaningful fabrics to create ʻOhana Day banners, calculating costs in fractional yard increments to spend as close to an $80 budget as possible without going over
End-of-Unit Performance Task (75 min) — Students plan a pūpū menu for their 5th-grade graduation celebration, selecting appetizers and multiplying fractional quantities by whole numbers to calculate total costs within a given budget
Standards: 5.NF.B.4, 5.NF.B.4a, K-12.MP.1-8
Curriculum Connections: Go Math, Stepping Stones, enVision Mathematics, Illustrative Mathematics, Great Minds, Investigations

In this Grade 5 Math instructional guide, students apply their knowledge and skills related to decimals through three tasks connected to real-world contexts in community service, campus beautification, and emergency preparedness.
Practice Task 1 (60 min) — Students select car wash supplies from a menu, calculate total expenses using decimal multiplication, then determine whether a car wash fundraiser would generate enough profit to donate at least $250 to a local charity
Practice Task 2 (60 min) — Students calculate the profit per item for a class art sale, then determine how many items — individually and in combination — they would need to sell to raise at least $520 for school mural supplies, justifying their reasoning
End-of-Unit Performance Task (60 min) — Students choose a type of emergency kit and the number of people it will serve, select items to include, and use all four decimal operations to calculate the total cost and cost per person
Standards: 5.NBT.B.7, 5.NBT.A.4, K-12.MP.1-6
Curriculum Connections: Stepping Stones, Into Math, Go Math

In this Grade 5 Math instructional guide, students apply their knowledge and skills related to adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers through three tasks connected to real-world contexts in food preparation, community wellness, and class celebration planning.
Practice Task 1 (60 min) — Students create a party mix by selecting ingredients in fractional amounts, then calculate total quantities and remaining portions using addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators
Practice Task 2 (60 min) — Students plan a relay race called the Ola Pono Challenge by assigning fractional running distances to each teammate and verifying that combined distances equal the full 4½-mile race length
End-of-Unit Performance Task (75 min) — Students independently plan a class celebration by selecting activities and assigning each a fractional portion of the school day, ensuring total time stays within the available allotment
Standards: 5.NF.A.1, 5.NF.A.2, K-12.MP.1-8

This Rich Math Tasks volume contains a collection of learner-centered mathematical challenges for students in grades 3-12. Everything you will find in this volume was designed by Hawaiʻi teachers for Hawaiʻi students as part of the ongoing, HIDOE-led Performance Assessment Development Initiative (PADI). These tasks have been thoughtfully crafted, piloted, and revised to serve as high-quality classroom-based tools that gauge student understanding and actively enhance learning and engagement.
This booklet is designed to be easy to print, either in its entirety or by selecting the pages of PDF you'd like to use. You can also find these tasks within the math instructional guides posted with their accompanying end-of-unit tasks under the "math" tab.
