Chess is more than a game. Research consistently shows that students who play chess develop stronger critical thinking, memory, and problem-solving skills. Studies have found that regular chess play improves cognitive abilities, emotional resilience, and social development — including how kids handle competition, manage setbacks, and work through complex problems. There is also a meaningful connection between chess and academic performance, particularly in math and reading.
Haven Chess Club at Haven Middle School in Evanston, Illinois is open to all students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade — beginners, casual players, and competitive players alike. Whether your child has never touched a chess piece or has been playing for years, there is a place for them here. Our club is a proud part of the Evanston Scholastic Chess (ES Chess) community, connecting Haven students with tournaments and players from across the Evanston District 65 school system.
