This book is as a result of collaborative work with two colleagues, Laura Grillo and Adriaan van Klinken. In its creative approach the book begins by exploring the historical development of the three three main religious traditions on the African continent, here identified as, African indigenous religions, Christianity and Islam. This is then followed by the thematic chapters that examines on the roles these religions play in the contemporary African societies.

This book examines the changing relationship between Muslims and the state in Kenya from precolonial times to the present, culminating in the radicalization of a section of the Muslim population in the country. The politicization of Islam in Kenya is deeply connected with the sense of marginalization that shapes Muslims’ understanding of Kenyan politics and government policies. In a critical way, the book presents a nuanced picture of political associations during the colonial and postcolonial periods, exploring the role of Kenyan Muslims as political actors thereby drawing on a broad range of interviews and historical research.
