Harwood Junior High’s girls athletics program focuses on excellence in academics, leadership, character development and competition as a vital part of the education process. Harwood Junior High and Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD have high expectations for the behavior and performance of the students participating in athletics.
Participation in athletics is a privilege, not a right, and is subject upon the athlete’s academic standing, attendance, and behavior defined in this document.
Attendance
7th grade athletes are expected to be in dress code and seated in their squad lines before the 8:15 a.m. bell.
8th grade athletes are expected to be in dress code and seated in their squad lines before 2:50 p.m.
Students failing to meet the time deadline, will receive a Tardy.
Grading
Students will be graded daily on two criteria: Participation and Dress Code.
Participation
Participation is mandatory EVERY day. A parent note will be accepted to excuse participation for that day only. A doctor’s note will be required thereafter.
Dress Code
If an athlete is in violation of one or more of these items, they will receive a deduction of 5 points from their six weeks grade; example, 80 (B) → 75 (C). Students are expected to self report dress code violations during attendance. Failure to do so will result in a deduction of 8 points; example, 95 (A) → 87 (B).

Locker Room
Locks & Lockers
At the beginning of the year, all athletes will be issued a locker. They will also be issued a lock with a unique combination. It is extremely important that the combination is not shared with other students. This is for protection, from both theft and illegal substances. The coaching staff will have a master list of combinations if forgotten. The cost to replace a lost lock is $15.
It is the responsibility of the athlete to lock up all of their belongings prior to leaving the locker room.
Harwood Junior High is NOT responsible for lost or stolen items from the locker room.
Cellular Devices/Cameras
The use of any cellular device is not permitted in the looker room at any time. This is a Harwood policy and is in place for protection. Furthermore, it can be considered a felony to take a picture in a place where there is an expectation of privacy. It could have someone in any state of dress behind them or in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable. This policy is not limited to cellular devices. Cameras, Polaroids, Chromebooks, and/or any device with picture taking capabilities are not permitted in the locker room at any time and will be confiscated if found. Depending on the severity of the offense, further action may be required.
7th Grade Specific Expectations
One Sport Rule
Athletes are required to participate in no less than one sport during their 7th grade year. Harwood offers five sports: volleyball, cross country, basketball, track, and soccer. Cross Country and soccer are NO CUT SPORTS! Meaning, all athletes who attend practices and compete in every meet/game, will be acknowledged as having participated in said sport. If a student does not participate in one sport during the school year, they may not be eligible to participate in 8th grade athletics. Coaches and administration will look at every case individually.
Entrance into 8th Grade Athletics
Seventh graders that have been 1) academically eligible all year (70 or higher in ALL classes), 2) have participated in at least one sport and, 3) have very few dress code violations/participation issues, will be permitted to enroll in athletics. Failure to meet any of the expectations listed above, may result in being denied enrollment into athletics. As stated earlier, every case will be individually evaluated.
