For me the mechanics that I love about rainbow is the destructibility of soft and hard walls. This mechanic and how it was done is the primary thing that set rainbow apart from other games. Everything in the game is centered around breaching reinforced or soft breachable walls or floors. Character abilities, maps, objectives, etc are all based around this mechanic. This mechanic allows for a lot of different versatility when it comes to strategy when getting the upper hand on your opponents. How Rainbow does not however different from many other games as of today's age, is the fact that the game is fact the game is a hero based shooter. This means that players can select from a cast of cast that have varying abilities to use against each other.
Dungeons and is a fantasy role playing game where you and friends set out on a mental adventure to complete objectives set in front of you by the dungeon master./ The game of Dungeons and Dragons focuses on the imagination of the players and the cooperation of the group as a whole. It was created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. The game was first published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. (TSR). AS for how many versions of Dungeons and Dragons the answer is kind of complicated due to the different levels of knowledge of the same edition of the game exist for each year. Not to mention there is also alternate versions of DnD mixed in as well. I would say there are between 8-15 different versions of Dungeons and Dragons.
The popularity of DnD spiked mostly in the 1970s and 1980s but that doesn't mean after those times that DnD just disappeared. DnD is very much still alive to this day but the big thing about DnD is that the it really has kind of just been floating around over the years. In 2020, it was said that between twitch and youtube viewership, they spent 150 million hours watching DnD content. DnD is very much still alive and still has a very general fanbase. It has seen some actual growth in the past couple of years as well though getting popular enough to spark hype for a movie to be made about it. The movie did bomb in theaters but none the less it had hype behind it. From August 3-6, 2023 there was a appearance by Dungeons and Dragon at Gen Con in Indianapolis, but other than that there are not too many physical events for DnD, but they do often host online DnD events as well and stream alot on twitch at twitch.com/DnD .
Overwatch 2 is another 5v5 Hero based Shooter but Overwatch takes a different approach from Rainbow where there are different approaches to each gamemode and the abilities of the hero's' are more directed towards the mechanics of how each hero plays vs the environment they're in. Now, in some cases there are exceptions, but that statement does stand for a majority of the game. One, of the primary mechanics of the game is the health bar system. The health bar system has a multitude of different aspects to it as far as different types of health (Armor, Shield, and Temp), character with more health that others (Tanks), and characters that can give health (Supports). This single mechanic give us our 3 different roles that you can play as in the game. They give the development a lot of flexibility as far as character creation and balancing. The health bar mechanic does exsist in alot of games today but not alot of game take the level or care to the fine tunings on the health bar system as Blizzard does. There are plent of other mechanics that help Overwatch to be the successful game it is today but I don't think any other is as good as their innovative Health Bar system.
