This past Christmas I wanted to make another something special for the kids. I made coasters using wood that would hopefully spark memories. I used poplar, white oak, and pine from my Dad's farm. I used some red oak from a tree in our front yard that I had milled into lumber. I used cherry left over from our kitchen cabinets, and cedar from planks from our old deck. (Yeah, I save about everything). The holders are made from white oak and the little splines are made from red oak. I used a waterfall pattern on some of them, but not in the one pictured. The coasters are not particularly pretty, but it's the built in memories that counts with these.
Since these are not cut on or directly involved with food, I give these a few coats of boiled linseed oil to allow the natural grain of the wood show through.
I've not decided on making and selling these yet.
