During the winter and spring term of my junior year, I worked as part of the Aves Compartidas 2023 environmental education team through the University of Oregon's Environmental Leadership Program (ELP). Aves Compartidas is a program within the Willamette Laja Twinning Project that aims to provide bilingual curriculum to students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade about migratory birds between Oregon, United States and Guanajuato, Mexico. Through the shared language of Spanish, students are able to learn about migratory birds and make cross-cultural connections.
My role within the project as an ELP facilitator was working with three 4th grade grade classrooms at River Road/El Camino del Río Elementary School. Winter term I studied pedagogical theory, practice, created curriculum, and spring term I implemented the lessons in the classroom. I worked as a lead educator for one class of 21 students, and supported my two other ELP facilitators in the other two classrooms.
Students in lesson 4 leaning about bird migration through an interactive habitat game, and in lesson 5, making bird feeders.
