In my college courses this far, I have been able to develop a global perspective or “intercultural maturity.” Taking multiple courses on various topics has been very beneficial for the way that I think, and it has helped me be able to answer the questions of intercultural maturity: How do I know? Who am I? How do I relate to others? I can now answer how I know because I have been able to broaden my horizon and expand my knowledge in several different aspects. For several of my Core classes I would have to consider multiple perspectives and think deeper about what my perspective is on different topics. I had multiple courses where I would have to submit a discussion post, and the questions would never be straight up answers, they required much thought and sometimes an analysis of some sort. These have helped me answer the question of who I am, meaning that developing how I felt about things, would help me integrate my identity and personal values into being my own person. Being able to analyze how I personally feel and developing my “own mind” has helped me be able to relate to values, beliefs, or sense of self to others. This has helped me be able to see both sides of conflicting ideas or differences.
Being able to experience other cultures and learning about different perspectives has helped me develop a wide global perspective. I have been able to learn so much from the courses that I have taken. If I didn’t take the CORE classes, I wouldn’t have been able to learn all these perspectives. I see the world and opposing ideas, and I wouldn’t have chosen them otherwise because most of them don’t pertain to my major. One course that has stood out to me which has helped me develop a new perspective is American government. In that course I has to write discussions about various parts of our government and had to give my opinion on different areas of our system, including the view of an opposing side. This is especially relevant to the current situations and big elections that our country is going through currently.
