During this 13-week internship-for-credit, I had the privilege of working as an intern in Congresswoman Kathy Manning's District Office (NC-06). This experience taught me so much about the importance and gratification of public service through assisting constituents, surrounded by coworkers who are so caring, patient, and dedicated to helping others. My responsibilities included opening casework and processing inquiries regarding government agencies, support, and Triad-area resources. I also led administrative tasks, drafted correspondences, and researched bills supported by the Congresswoman.
This internship contributed greatly to my interest in and understanding of the public policy sphere and how government can work, even for the least of these. Working a total of over 180 hours, I was inspired by citizens' trust in their Congressional representative and was motivated by the small role I was able to play in the reunion of families through connecting them to immigration services or the alleviation of social welfare stressors through providing constituents with Section 8 housing resources. Not only did I conclude this position feeling more connected to my corner of North Carolina community, I left even more passionate about pursuing law.
University Ambassador Captain
I have served as a High Point University Ambassador since the second semester of my freshman year, Spring 2021, and it has been one of my favorite growth experiences at HPU. Making personal connections with families and showing them how much HPU feels like home is such a sweet way to give back to this school. Representing the university and helping high school students to navigate such an exciting and important decision is such a privilege! In Spring 2022, I was promoted to UA Captain and given an amazing team to train and lead in their UA positions as well. Serving as a captain (with unbiasedly the best team in the program) has given me some of the sweetest friendships and improved my abilities as an ambassador as well, strengthening my leadership skills and overall building professional life skills such as public speaking and guest services/human relations. I love every second of welcoming prospective families to High Point through this program and I am so proud of everyone on my team for their hard work as well!
Student Instructor & Tutor
For both semesters of my sophomore year (Fall 2021-Spring 2022) I served as a Student Instructor for our Political Science department's International Relations course. This entailed attending classes with the students, taking notes and making myself a friendly face, available to guide students and review information with them to help them succeed in the course. I offered tutoring services, office hours, and study sessions for ~80 students per semester. First semester junior year (Fall 2022) I served as a tutor for the Political Science Research Methods course, again offering office hours and study sessions for students seeking help, often with SPSS software.
I spent Summer 2021 in Cleveland, OH, a new adventure specifically dedicated to an internship at the largest county court in the state of Ohio, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. This internship allowed me to witness firsthand numerous court cases and to gain greater knowledge and understanding of what this career in the field of law entails, showcasing many different roles from prosecuting and defense courtroom attorneys, to law clerks, to administrative staff, to judges of the municipal, county, appeals, and federal levels.
I led and completed administrative tasks, developed research projects, and conducted face-to-face surveys with nearly 1,000 interviewees. I also coordinated with attorneys and shadowed judges that gave me insight and advice regarding their learned experiences.
