Welcome to Gladiatores! Gladiatores, meaning "Titans" in Latin, is Hall’s Foreign Language Magazine. Here, we showcase all the amazing work done by Hall's Foreign Language Department: Spanish, French, Chinese, Latin, and American Sign Language (ASL). Each language section contains submissions that include articles, videos, recipes, art, and more! Click on the name of each language below to explore the contents of each section! Fall Holidays

Dia de Los Muertos:

A fun celebration of the importance of life, El Día de Los Muertos honors and celebrates the ancestors of families across Mexico and Altars are constructed, and many traditional foods, drinks, sugar skulls, flowers, candles, and clothing are placed at gravesites.

Chinese Moon Festival / Mid-Autumn festival - September 10

A time where people all over China gather with family, pray and give thanksgiving. Lighting incense sticks, spending time with family, and giving each other mooncakes are popular traditions.

Chuseok - 14th day of the 8th lunar month

A Korean Harvest Festival celebrated to visit ancestral graves and honor the dead. Depending on the lunar calendar, the holiday is celebrated at the end of summer or the beginning of autumn. Chuseok is a special time for spreading happiness and togetherness between families and friends.

Navaratri - September/October

An Indian festival celebrating the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. Lasting nine (nava) nights (ratri), people celebrate in different ways. In Gujarat, people dance in styles known as Garba and Dandiya Raas; Bengal is known for their Durga Puja; but people all over celebrate the victory of good over evil.

La Toussaint - November 1st

A French and Italian festival that celebrates all the saints that have died and made it to heaven. All Saints' Day, another name for the holiday, is one of the 2 biggest holidays celebrated in France.

Guy Fawkes Night - November 5

A UK holiday, celebrating a failed terrorist attempt to blow up the houses of parliament by religious extremists, specifically Guy Fawkes. Thousands of British people gather by lighting bonfires, burning effigies of Fawkes, and watching fireworks.

Diwali - October/November

Celebrated all over India by various religious groups, Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated for 5 days in October or November based on the Lunar calendar. While it has different significances for different groups of people, it is agreed that it symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
