Another source (with great scrapbooks, but none it seems of the Hakone): Kuji Sato traveled to Europe via the United States in September 1920 after closing the Hibiya Museum of Art. The companion is Kume Taminosuke (painter).
While observing the art situation in various places, he will help Kume's solo exhibition in New York and the "Japanese Art Exhibition" (responsible for: Eisaku Wada) held at the Grand Palais in Paris in France.
After the exhibition, he returned to Japan in 1922 with the exhibited work as the person in charge of carrying out.

I had never heard of the English poet and critic Edmund Blunden, but, according to "Edmund Blunden and the Incitements of Japan" by Miriam J. Benkovitz on "Friday, March 28, 1924 at 4:10 P.M., Blunden left Liverpool Street Station, London, on the boat-train for Southampton, where he boarded the S. S. Hakone Maru to sail by way of Singapore and Hong Kong half-way round the "swaying" world to Japan." Blunden apparently had vivid memories of that day, but I have not tracked those down.

At the same time, at that time , they were both dreamy and enthusiastic , and they were busy pioneering their own paths with the aspirations of Aoun .It is undeniable that there was a youthful folly mistake in disrespecting other people 's fields . On this trip to Europe, Yokomitsu chose a cruise ship via the Indian Ocean for the outbound journey, and a trans-Soviet train for the return journey. His vision of the world from "Hakone Maru" is already a bit of a colonialist taste: "It feels very long from Shanghai to Singapore. Almost all uncivilized countries have passed through. When I think of it, there will be three times more. The uncivilized area of this journey will continue to Marseilles, and I feel that the occurrence of the war is not unreasonable. Who would be indifferent to this?" ("European Travel · March 2") This is a few years later. The astonishing prediction of the outbreak of the "Greater East Asian War"! “When the British government reformed the currency system, it seemed that it always applied and experimented in India first. Because it was applied to the indigenous people in undeveloped areas, the response was the most obvious. Today’s best British economists are all formerly in India. Yes. Japan’s experimental site is Manchuria." ("European Travel·March 4") Puppets of the pseudo "Manchuria", have you heard this? "By detouring the Indian Ocean, you are walking from uncivilized regions to the apex of European culture. It is like a reproduction of the journey through a long history to modernity." ("European Travel · March 7") to Yokomitsu In other words, this is not only a journey of "pilgrimage" to heaven, but also a tour with a colonial consciousness. Both should not feel bad.
It was also on the "Hakone Maru" that Yokomitsu heard a lot of gossip. One of them was: "There was a rich American who took this ship with his elbow on the deck railing, and he talked with Major General Hasebe: Japan has taken down the area east of Lake Baikal, and other countries will not say anything. It should be taken down sooner. Just don’t shout when it’s dry.” ("Europe Travel, February 28") From the arrogant Yankee who peeed in front of Ryuno Akutagawa, the Yankee of Yokomitsu Ryuichi is no longer what he used to be. He has begun to slap the Japanese flattery and wants to lead Japan’s disaster to the Soviet Union (or I want to kill Japan with the sword of the Soviet Union). This Yankee didn't know it, but the Japanese had already thought so. Just a few months later, Japan formulated its national defense policy, listed the Soviet Union as its number one enemy, and quietly prepared for war. However, in the Nomonkan incident three years later, the Japanese suffered a big loss and learned the power of "Lao Maozi", so they reluctantly gave up the "Northern" plan, switched to the "Southern" strategy, and then attacked Pearl. Hong Kong, beating the Yankees so much--this is enough to comfort Akutagawa Ryunosuke's hatred of "being (forced) to pee" in those days, but it can be regarded as karma for Yokomitsu's Yankees.

"6. Riichi Yokomitsu "Kaishu Journey" and "Travel"
As the last travel report, I would like to mention the writer Riichi Yokomitsu (1898-1947)'s "Kaishu Journey".
In 1936 (Showa 11), Yokomitsu was a correspondent for both the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun and the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun, and Bell in August.
Under the guise of publishing a report of watching the Lynn Olympics in newspapers, the actual purpose was to travel to Europe to observe and consider European civilization widely, with Paris as the base. In 1937 (Showa 12), the correspondence sent by Yokomitsu to newspapers and magazines during the trip was published together in "Kaishu Noriyuki".
Yokomitsu, who left Tokyo Station by night train on February 18, stayed in Osaka on the 19th and boarded NYK's Hakone Maru in Kobe on the 20th. Kyoshi Takahama (1874-1959), a Noh performer from Yokohama, happens to be on the same boat, and the two are eating at the same table on the boat and enjoying a party together59. After leaving Moji, he entered Marseille on March 27, after passing through the sea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Penang, Colombo, Aden, and Suez.
In the first place, Yokomitsu said that he didn't want to go abroad before he left. Japanese literary stage

It is said that he was reluctant to leave, but he still seems to enjoy playing golf on the boat and sightseeing at the port of call. However, "If you crawl into the Mediterranean, it's a kind of decision.
I thought I would be lazy. However, I am not impressed with anything. The sea is the sea. "" When you crawl into the Mediterranean Sea, the psychology of passengers becomes complicated no matter how much you hide it. (Omitted) Strangely, it has never been so clear. In our hearts, we can see a description that shows a stern consciousness toward Europe, such as "Hmm, what is the Mediterranean Sea." 62 when landing in Marseille, only the oldest passenger at customs
"Because you are the oldest here, weigh your luggage on your behalf."

"We saw the first freedom of the French," said the episode "I want."
It is introduced with plenty of irony. And the impression after landing was as follows. "Mysterious thing
In addition, no one in Marseille's crowd is laughing. "" Around 5 pm, a crowd of people floods the streets, but they are tired, pale, sinking, and sick. It's all about it. The setting sun shines there. Is this Europe? This is far more hell than I imagined. "
Even though he was prepared to compete and confront Western civilization as a representative intellectual of Japan 63,
It seems that Mari is also biased.
The novel that was born based on this experience of traveling abroad is "Travel". Arrow, the main character of the traditional Japaneseist
About this unfinished masterpiece, centered on the controversy between the generation and the modern Westernist Kuji, and also involving love with women such as Chizuruko
I can't really fully discuss it here, but in the context of Marseille, I entered the Mediterranean.
I felt that my feelings at that time were "similar to the possession of soldiers going out to the battlefield," and "for a long time, Japan wandered.
Europe has learned a lot. And at the same time, Japan was constantly humiliated because of that.
Yashiro, who thinks it was "Europe" 64, would be Yokomitsu's spokesman. On the eve of disembarkation, he even said, "Tomorrow we will finally get on the enemy side." 65. And finally, while waiting for the ship to disembark, "Europe, which I haven't seen yet, lays under my feet as a monster. I want to step on this monster with one foot as soon as possible." 66 This is probably the feeling that Yokomitsu himself had.
Yashiro, who landed and visited Notre Dame de la Garde Temple at the end of the city tour, has a shocking experience67. As soon as I entered the dark church from the open air under the bright sky of Southern France, a naked statue of Christ, who had become pale and bleeding from his mouth, lay at his feet. Yashiro, who was upset by the statue that was so real, wondered, "Is there a time when I was so depressed in the culture of this country?""

This is, in fact, almost exactly what happened, and was verified using the passenger lists held at The National Archives.227 He actually travelled with four students, and gave ‘c/o G. Koizumi, 83 Ebury Street, London’, as the proposed address on arrival, for him and the four boys. This was part of Ichiro’s ambition for Japanese wrestling; having competed in the 1932 Games, he was the team coach in 1936.

Despite her personal issues, Sarah’s links to Japan and judo continued. Hatta arrived in London on 30 June 1935.12 Unlike Sarah, who had travelled alone, Ichiro was accompanied by four other young Japanese men. Also unlike Sarah, they travelled third class, and were the only passengers on the ship from Yokohama to London to do so.13 The passenger list had Ichiro (spelt Itiro) as the first of the men, and gave his occupation as ‘none’. The other four, were listed as ‘student’. The men’s names were given as Kodama Masami, Kikuma Toreo, Kazama Eiichi, and Tamba Kojiro. As we have seen in the previous chapter, this was the intended Japanese wrestling team for the Berlin Olympics, planned for the following year.14 The team which actually fought at the Olympic Games differed slightly. Tamba and Kazama who were from Waseda University were included, but three other men joined them, two from Meiji University and one other from Waseda.15
