On 1 December, the Japanese Messageries ship, the Hakone Maru, brought Father Fukahori back to Japan, whose forthcoming return from Rome we had announced after completing his studies at the Propaganda Seminar.

On 26.7.1922 Martyn [Aurel King, youngest RAF Battle of Britain fatality] with his parents & 3 siblings(age 5, 4 & 1) left London for Shanghai on SS Hakone Maru. they were in 2nd class.

Father George E shown as a missionary.

His parents & 3(aged 4,3,& 4 months) siblings had previously returned on 6.1.1921 from Shanghai to London on SS Nellore. Father shown as a Medical Missionary, and his mother as a Missionary.

His parents had married in Shanghai in 1919.

In 1939 his mother Ivy E(1888) with daughter Gladys D(1920) and 2 others(Boarders?). At 51 Page St, Hendon. Ivy was a missionary on furlong

Martyn Aurel King was born on 15th October 1921 in West Mersea, Essex.

He was the son of Dr. George Edwin King, a medical missionary, and his second wife, formerly Ivy Ethel Wallis. Both GE King’s marriages had taken place in China and he would die there by drowning on 5th September 1927.

MA King attended the prep (from 1927) and boys (from 1931) schools at Chefoo School in northern China, founded by the China Inland Mission. He was Captain of Boats and a member of the Football Xl. After leaving school in 1938, he returned to the UK and took a business course.

He joined the RAF on a short service commission and began his initial training course on 14th August 1939.

He completed his training and arrived at 5 OTU Aston Down on 13th May 1940.

Their eldest son, John Owen Gauntlett, taught English at Aoyama Gakuin University and was also a flautist. J. O. Gauntlett also gave a set of lectures on teaching English as a foreign language at Nanzan University in Tokyo, that were edited by James A. Noonan and then published as a book by MacMillan Press.^[3]

I was interested in the fact that you are in contact with the "Japanese Gauntletts" as I grew up in Japan -- My father, Percy Thomas Luke went to Japan as a missionary in 1932 and met and married my mother, Beatrice Amy Gauntlett. They were missionaries to Japan. My sister, Constance (decd 1996) was born in Tokyo in 1938. I was born in Johannesburg in 1939. They returned to Japan taking me,in 1940. My father was born in Johannesburg but had UK Citizenship as he was born in 1908 when the Province of the Transvaal was briefly a British Crown Colony. There is only one Gauntlett left in Japan, my cousin David Gauntlett Kawamura, the son of John Owen Gauntlett -- (David changed his surname to his birth mother's maiden name to simplify things for his daughter, Julia Saiko). I am hoping to visit them in September. I went to High School with David's sister Margaret who was tragically killed in a car accident in 1959. I have three other cousins in Japan, two are the children of my Aunt Winnie who married a Japanese nobleman and whose son Hide (decd) was a playmate for the then Crown Prince and present Emperor while our immediate family (Luke) were interned in Tokyo during the war. The other cousin is Jackie, who was the daughter of Frances Gauntlett (cannot remember her married name) and who has been in communication with a Gauntlett in England -- I believe the name is Richard Gauntlett, but I'm not certain.

"Herbert Davy was from London, England and was one of the first to follow Meher Baba when he met him in East Challacombe in mid-September 1931. Herbert departed England on 17th September, taking up a teaching position at Nanking University in China employed by the League of Nations. He traveled on the SS HAKONE MARU, arriving in Shanghai in late Sept., early October 1931. The first letter Herbert posted was to "Chanji" Dadachanji which was written on the 23rd September 1931 when he had reached Singapore on his voyage to China. Because of Herbert's presence in China, Meher Baba utilized his skills and connections in planning his first visit which was accompanied by some of his male Mandali in June 1932. A month earlier Baba had sent another party of his men Mandali to China and await his arrival. Herbert took care of all these arrangements."
