This is the prerequisite course for many advanced-level linguistic courses. It covers a wide range of topics in Linguistics: phonetics, phonology, syntax, morphology, semantics, pragmatics, language acquisition (both L1 and L2), psycholinguistics, language and culture, etc. The goal is to provide a survey of the field of Linguistics, so students have a taste of this broad discipline and the wide range of inspiration they can get as a Linguistics major.
Instructor of record: Spring 2024, Spring 2025
This course focuses on the theories of Second Language Acquisition(SLA). Lectures are combined with hands-on analysis of learner language data, paper presentation, and individual projects. Students learn the interdisciplinary nature of this field, and are exposed to the various types of SLA research.
