Deep-Dive Haiku: a game for deep knowledge
DEEP-DIVE HAIKU is about applying haiku quotes (from scholars, haiku poets, etc.) to haiku poems to see if what you learn from the quote can deepen your reading of the poem. To play you need haiku cards and quote cards. You can use the haiku cards and quote cards here at the website, but it's even better if you make your own!
When you play, read the haiku poem(s) first and let that sink into your mind.
Then, read the quote card(s). Think about how the quote can connect to the world of haiku poetry; the connection may be obvious and direct, or it might be a more indirect connection. You might try to formulate a question in your mind about what exactly you are going to be looking for when you turn back to the haiku.
And when you turn back to the haiku, what do you see now? Is there a match? If so, that's great! But it's also fine if there is not really a match. The point is to provoke new thoughts, but not to force things that don't fit. Just keep on exploring and see what you can learn!

Single quote with multiple poems: which, if any, of the poems resonates with the quote? Reload the page to see another random quote and more random poems.
Multiple quotes with single poem: which of the quotes best resonates with the poem? Reload the page to see another combination of poem and quotes.
You can also play with your own cards: your own quote cards and/or your own poem cards. Here's how playing with your own cards can work for the single quote version; adjust accordingly if you want to play the multiple quotes version:
You can use the online random quote card if you are playing with your own poem cards. Shuffle your poem cards and then lay out four cards for each round. Then look to see which, if any, of the poems include the feature.
Next round: refresh the quote card page and lay out four more of your poem cards.
You can use the online poems if you are playing with your own quote cards. Shuffle your quote cards and draw one quote card for each round. Then look to see which, if any, of the random poems resonate with your quote.
Next round: refresh the poem page and draw another one of your quote cards.
If you are playing with your own quote cards and your own poem cards, just lay the cards out for each round: four poems plus one feature card per round.
Deep-Dive Multiplayer Zoom. One person will be the Game Leader, and they will be reading off the random quotes, looking at the random quote card here, or looking at their own quote cards, drawing one quote card for each round.
The players will be looking at a random set of four poems for each round, or maybe they will be looking at their own poem cards; if so, they should lay out four cards at a time to look at.
After the Game Leader reads the feature aloud, each player looks at their poems. Hopefully at least one poem will resonate with the quote, and perhaps more than one poem. If there is no match, the player passes that round.
After people have had a chance to study their four poem cards, the Game Leader then goes around the Zoom room, asking each person to share a poem that resonates with the quote.
And remember, when reading haiku, read slowly, and read the haiku twice — and give the author's name too.
After each player has had a chance to read a poem, the Game Leader reloads the page for another quote card or, if they have their own quote card deck, they draw another quote card, and the players get ready with another four poem cards, either online or their own cards.
Deep-Dive Multiplayer In Person. There is no difference in the way the game is played in-person compared to Zoom.
About the haiku cards in person: In addition to the players either using haiku cards they have made themselves OR using the random online cards, the Game Leader can have prepared cards in advance which they deal out to all the players.
