Student Best Practices and Core Expectations - Haarith Lab
To be honest, respectful, and fair towards all members of the laboratory and classroom, always in accordance with established university policies and other classroom policies outlined in the syllabus.
To adhere to all codes of conduct and ethics applicable in terms of classroom, departmental and University policies in all situations and capacities while representing the lab and the University.
To assist peers in professional and scholarly developments and to mentor junior colleagues and other staff as reasonably required.
To respectfully bring any interpersonal complaints or concerns to the lab head for mediation and avoid personal confrontations as much as possible.
To read, understand and agree with the expectations as outlined in the syllabus or mutually agreed upon individual development plan(s) or academic advising committee recommendations.
To communicate regularly with academic adviser and the academic advising committee and update them on research and education progress, and to record such communications.
To enthusiastically participate in lab meetings and journal clubs with high degree of self-accountability and communicate research with peers to seek input and feedback.
To be self-driven and responsible to achieve set goals as determined in consultation with the graduate adviser and or academic advising committee.
To seek help sooner than later, whenever necessary, from graduate adviser and or academic advising committee and or mentor(s). Students are encouraged to choose mentors in addition to graduate adviser, if necessary.
To learn and to be updated on current research methods and historical perspectives relevant to the discipline of study.
To diligently maintain, with highest integrity and legibility, physical and digital records of work, data, and analyses.
To bring in any feedback or concerns respectfully and promptly about the lab head and graduate adviser as necessary via email or other means of official communication.
To receive appropriate experience in training, mentoring, and teaching other students as applicable to one’s career goals.
To seek all available opportunities and avenues to network with fellow scientists in the field and allied fields of study, represent the lab appropriately with the adviser’s consent.
To appropriately contribute to scientific discourses and discussions in the discipline through seminars, conferences, collaborative, and interdisciplinary projects, etc.,
To seek faculty members who can complement the graduate adviser and supplement the individual professional development needs.
To keep oneself informed of policies, guidelines and regulations governing degree progress and complete all required paperwork and other due obligations on time.
