To be honest, transparent, respectful, impartial, and fair to every member of the lab team in accordance with university policies against discrimination, harassment of all types, and in favor of normative standards of confidentiality.
To create a hierarchy-free environment to facilitate free and open discussions of scholarly and collegial pursuits and to avoid all positions of conflicts of interest.
To create a collegial classroom and laboratory environment that values and acknowledges individual contributions and holds open discussions on authorship and due credits for contributions.
To provide a safe and encouraging work environment for every student (undergraduate, graduate, etc.) and employee (technicians, postdocs, etc.) to achieve their goals.
To help set individual goals, both short-term and long-term, for every team member.
To be available, with reasonable exceptions, to meet one-on-one in-person or on video conference with students and employees on a mutually agreed upon time and frequency to discuss progress, set, and review goals, and help navigate any other issues.
To provide appropriate guidelines and input in formulating timelines and individual development plans during one-on-one meetings.
To provide and or seek assistance for students and employees to reach their career and employment goals.
To encourage and prepare students and appropriate employees to participate and present in networking and other scholarly activities such as conferences, workshops, grant-writing, publication, patents etc., as appropriately applicable.
To respectfully communicate both positive and negative feedback in a timely and constructive manner.
To objectively examine critical feedback and concerns and adapt mentoring style to suit individual student/ employee as much as possible.
To adhere to all the community expectations as outlined above in this document.
To provide a detailed syllabus, that outlines clear outcomes and expectations for both the instructor and the students, well in advance for the courses taught.
To ensure reasonable and fair guidelines are available to regulate the submission and grading of assignments and other scholarly milestones; including but not limited to assignment grading rubrics, test and quiz dates and other provisions for accommodating inevitable exceptions to meet set deadlines.
To ensure all necessary materials are made available to the students ahead of reasonable time to prepare with them.
