Designerly Ways of Learning

Putting Digital Tools In The Hands Of The Learners

Donaldson and Barany (2019) redeveloped a teacher preparation program, which was originally designed to enhance teachers' skills in curricular design using digital tools.

This case study is pertinent to our project in it's strong use of Constructionist theory as its theoretical framework as well as situated learning in its design principles.

Their Design Thinking for Engaged Learning, as shown in Figure 1, is also reflective of our own process.

The paper concluded:

"This design-based research project exemplifies instructional design grounded in a strong theoretical framework that integrates elements of constructionism, designerly ways of knowing, situated learning, and identity exploration. " (Donaldson and Barany, 2019)
