Diego Colombara

"Beyond conventional lithography: ongoing efforts in the projects REMAP, e-APP, and TRANSMIT"

BIO-SKETCHDiego Colombara is Associate Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Genova (Italy). His Master studies in Italy and UK focused on solid state chemistry and metallurgy, with emphasis on phase equilibria, crystallography and alloys microstructure. His doctorate at the University of Bath (UK) was devoted to the synthesis and photoelectrochemical characterization of Earth-abundant chalcogenides for PV applications by electroplating and reactive annealing, as well as by chemical vapour transport (EPSRC-funded project SUPERGEN, 2008-2012). Hid PhD advisor was Prof. Laurie M. Peter, pioneer of semiconductor (photo)electrochemistry. DC acquired 5 years of postdoctoral research and teaching experience within the Physics department at the Unversity of Luxembourg, including 3 years as researcher in FP7 project SCALENANO and 2 years as the Principal Investigator of GALDOCHS (a 453 k€ research project funded by the FNR), where he discovered, studied and developed a novel methodology for extrinsic doping of PV semiconductors that enabled to refute a 20-years old assumption on CIGS PV technology. DC joined the University of Genova after 2 years of Marie Curie fellowship at INL (Portugal), where he appears as the inventor of a patent that represents the basis of REMAP, a ca. 4M€ collaborative project funded by the European Innovation Council. He has authored ca. 40 articles and served as peer reviewer for ca. 100 studies.

Aldo Di Carlo

"Nanoparticles and two-dimensional materials for new generation photovoltaics"

BIO-SKETCHAldo Di Carlo is a distinguished Full Professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering of the University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy). Since September 2019, he has held the prestigious position of Director of the Structure of Matter Institute of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR-ISM), and since 1st January 2021, he has also been the president of the CNR Research Area of Rome – RM2, which includes over 10 research institutes. From 2007 to 2019, Di Carlo served as Director of the Organic Solar Pole of the Lazio Region, where he supervised the research and development of organic and hybrid organic/inorganic solar cells. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Dyepower consortium for the development of Dye Solar Cells (DSC) from 2009 to 2015.Di Carlo's research interests encompass the study, design, and optimization of electronic and optoelectronic devices. In recent years, his research has focused on the development and scaling-up of organic photovoltaic cells, with particular emphasis on Dye Solar Cells (DSC) and Perovskite Solar Cells, for industrial applications. He has authored/co-authored over 600 international scientific publications and holds 12 international patents. Furthermore, he has acted as a general coordinator/partner coordinator for more than 25 large European Projects, indicating his leadership in the field.

Maria Gonzalez-Juarez

"Dynamic magnetic masks: towards switchable faradaic electrochemistry"

BIO-SKETCHMaria Gonzalez-Juarez earned her PhD. in Chemistry at the University of Southampton, UK where she investigated semiconducting metal-organic frameworks for thermoelectric applications. Then, she worked at IMDEA Nanoscience Institute, Spain as a postdoctoral researcher on carbon nanotubes reinforced polymers and assembly of heterostructures via electrochemical routes. Currently, she works at the University of Luxembourg as a postdoctoral researcher on patterned electrochemistry for micro concentrators PV devices.

Gary Friedman

"Magnetic micro-robotics"

BIO-SKETCHGary Friedman obtained his PhD at the University of Maryland, USA. Between 1991 and 2001 he was with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago and, since then, with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Between 2005 and 2018 he was an Affiliate Professor of Surgery at Drexel University. He has published over 120 papers spanning the areas of magnetic hysteresis modeling, magnetic field computations, magnetic nanoparticle applications in micro-robotics, biotechnology and medicine, as well as applications of atmospheric pressure plasma discharges in medicine. He has developed miniature NMR systems, magnetically targeted drug delivery, remote magnetic manipulation of miniature devices in soft tissues for robotic & minimally invasive surgeries, plasmonic tools for single cell analysis. He is currently an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics.

Sawssen Slimani

"Designing and tuning the magnetism of nanoarchitectures"

BIO-SKETCHSawssen Slimani (SS) Took the Ph.D. in Sciences and Technologies of Chemistry and Materials in 2022 at the university of Genova (Italy). Currently, she is a Fixed-term researcher at the university of Genova (UNIGE)_ department of chemistry and industrial chemistry (DCCI). Since 2018 she has been carrying out her research activity on magnetic hybrid nanoarchitectures for different applications (e.g. biomedical, energy and environmental) and fundamental studies. Her expertise spans the synthesis of magnetic nanoarchitectures using different synthesis methods (i.e., coprecipitation, thermal decomposition and microemulsion) and their surfaces functionalization (i.e., mesoporous silica coating, molecular coating). The results of her research were published in 14 papers and 22 contributions to national and international conferences (Invited Talk: 3, - oral contributions: 12, -poster presentations:7). In her role as a Fixed-term researcher, she is also engaged in teaching physical-chemistry courses and international programs, such as the SERP+ master, and in students’ supervision (7 students between bachelor, master and PhD). In addition, SS gained experience in chemical-physical characterizations of magnetic nanostructures such us magnetization measurements, (SQUID, VSM, Hysteresigraph), X-Ray Diffraction, Infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis.
