OBJECTIVES
Offer a safe, therapeutic, and welcoming classroom environment for students to achieve individualized educational goals
Provide academic and/or therapeutic support to students outside of the classroom as required
Provide alternative and flexible teaching supports, which may include the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
Refer at-risk youth to local agencies and organizations to improve quality of life
Provide skills training, experiential learning opportunities, and activities that promote healthy active living
Support in pathway planning, including workplace and post-secondary transitions
Engage youth in meaningful activities that encourage growth and empowerment
Advocate on behalf of students and support accessing basic needs (clothing, food, hygiene supplies, referrals to housing, etc.)
Our Students
Give Yourself Credit students are between the ages of 14-21 and face various challenges preventing them from experiencing success in mainstream schooling. These challenges may include:
Homelessness or unstable housing
Pregnancy or early parenthood
Mental health difficulties
Substance Use & Addiction
Poverty
Health needs
Unhealthy relationships
Unsupportive environments
It is our goal to assist our students in overcoming these barriers in a safe, non-judgemental environment as they build the skills necessary for success.
Social/Emotional Support
Child and Youth Workers (CYWs) committed to supporting students in overcoming barriers – substance use, mental health, parenting, housing, etc.
Regular check-ins to support connection, accountability, problem solving and goal setting
'Therapeutic Mondays'; a weekly group centered around self-reflection, personal growth and community building
Goal review meetings with the GYC team at regular intervals (approximately every six weeks) to ensure the team is working toward each student's individualized goals
Assistance for students with applications, resume writing, appointment making, phone calls
Guest speakers and programming from the community aimed at building skills for life and facilitating growth and learning opportunities
Education
Individualized schedules
One-to-one support from teachers and EAs
Opportunity for course delivery through digital, booklet, group and co-op credit format
Access to programming through Continuing Education, Dual Credit (Conestoga College), 2nd Chance, Lutherwood
Opportunities to complete volunteer hours
Outreach with the goal of developing school-readiness skills
Assistance in pathway planning, including post secondary and workplace transitions
Healthy Lifestyle
A focus on wholistic wellness, including physical, mental, and emotional well-being
A food program offered through the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington, including daily breakfast, snack, and lunch
The opportunity to learn kitchen and cooking skills at GYC as well as through partnerships with the SEED, the Guelph Community Health Centre, and other supporting community partners
Opportunities to participate in activities such as Zumba, yoga, sports, nature walks, both on site and through field trips and community agencies
