In this workshop you will gain a greater understanding of how to use art as writing and how to enhance your students' writing through the use of art. Every scholar has a voice and all writing looks different. It is up to us as educators to foster their artistic voices and allow their voices to be visible. Participants will leave with an understanding of the writing process and how to foster the love of writing with scholars that have yet to perfect their voice.
Nakeesha is a teacher in the St. Louis area working with high risk students. She enjoys learning new and innovative ways to enhance her teaching. She believes students learn best in environments where they feel comfortable to make mistakes. Writing is one of her favorite subjects to teach because it allows students to be creative and feel comfortable with what they create.

In the session we will explore how to use objects to engage and inspire the writer’s mind. The lesson focus will revolve around a mini-unit with a variety of suitcases containing items belonging to the owners of each. This will be an interactive lesson in which participants can put themselves in their students' shoes to see how the writing mind can be inspired with the added element of incorporating the five senses. Additional object writing prompts will be shared leaving participants with ideas to take back and implement in the classroom immediately.
Kathryn Inman is an ELA teacher for the Greenville R-ll School District. This school year marks her ninth year teaching and her fifth year teaching fifth grade. Inman was recently named one of two Southeast Missouri Teachers of Year and advanced to be honored as one of seven finalists for the Missouri State Teacher of the year for 2024. She is currently working towards her Master's in Education with an emphasis on reading, as well as her DESE Reading Certification through the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Inman believes that learning happens best when there is a strong foundation built on trust, love, and communication.

In this session, we will learn about building community through group storytelling. We will use the red (noun) cards and green (adjective) cards from the Apples to Apples Junior game to tell a story based on input from each (student) participant. This activity not only creates community through the act of collective storytelling, but also further solidifies the bond when the story is read aloud upon completion. It will be a fun and enlightening session for all in attendance.
Jason is in his 7th year of teaching ELA and currently works in Northwest R1 School District. He will start his PhD next fall.

This session will be interactive with writing activities for elementary and secondary math teachers that prompt students to draw conclusions and write complete sentences in their math journal entries. Activities will include using manipulatives like spaghetti, straws, and pipe cleaners to introduce math concepts, identifying patterns to write poems, and more. Come to this session to have fun with math and writing!
Necole has her MAT from SIUE , BS from Northwestern University Evanston IL, is a Teacher Consultant for the Gateway Writing Project. She currently serves as the Math Department Chairperson at Normandy Senior High School and teaches Algebra and AP Statistics. She loves spending time with her son, daughter in law, and 3 grandsons.
