For too long, the will of the Breton people has been silenced, our culture repressed, our language silenced. For too long it has been a crime for our people to celebrate their identity, and indeed has been nearly impossible for our people to even embrace their identity. Therefore Gwenn ha Du movement seeks to rally the Breton people behind a single slogan: "Bezañ Breizhad".
Bezañ Breizhad means simply "be Breton", and we advocate that the Breton people do not confine their language to their homes, or their culture to a festival or holiday. The true crime is that in Breton schools, we are not permitted to learn in our language. The true crime is that when we walk down our streets, we cannot see any words written in Breton because of regulations that enforce French preference bilingualism upon our businesses and institutions. Therefore it is our mission to make it legal, and thus make it possible for us to be truly Breton with the respect that we deserve.
