The GW Sailing Team offers two distinct options for joining - catering to different experience levels and commitment.
The Competitive Sailing Team is an option for individuals who are interested in pursuing sailing at a higher level, competing regularly in regattas, and traveling most weekends for races. Members of the competitive team are expected to commit to practices, travel schedules, and the demands of competing at the collegiate level. This path requires a higher cost of participation, which helps cover travel, entry fees, and other team expenses. It’s ideal for those who are already experienced sailors or those who are eager to develop their skills and compete against other collegiate teams. Our other program, "Learn to Sail" is designed for individuals who have minimal to no prior sailing experience. For more information about this introductory program focused on the basics of sailing, follow the Learn to Sail page.
Recruit FAQ
The race team does require a relativley high level of comitment for practices and regattas. We practice in the morning during the week and are sailing over the weekends, often traveling across the east coast. Although it is a large time comitment, all of our members are able to excel in school as well as join other GW organizations. As a freshman on the team, the adjustment to college can be tricky but our uppclassmen are incredibly supportive with advice and grace towards those navigating college for the first time.
You can reach out to the recruitment officers as early as your Junior year when you start thinking about colleges and deciding if you want to sail beyond high school. Leading up to your application, the recruitment officers are eager to get to know you and provide any advice or answer any questions that you have. DC and GW are incredibly special and we want to help you see if its the right fit for you!
Yes! The best way to learn more the team and what we do is by coming to a practice or going on a tour from a member. You can see where we run practices and how a college practice functions. Its a great way to see a college practice if you have not before. If you are unable to come for a practice but are still visiting, someone on the team will be able to show you around campus and talk about their experience. We have a diverse group of sailors across many majors and states that there is almost always someone who can connect with you through their major or your hometown.
Since we are a club team we are unable to recruit any high schoolers. Although we are a club team without recruitment power, we still compete at the highest level of collegiate sailing and function completely like a varsity team. Our team is incredibly strong and we are eager to continue growing in the coming years.
The biggest difference of course is the level of sailing. College sailing is much more demanding and competitive than high school sailing. We also sail more consistently in FJs and 420s at regattas and travel more than the typical high school sailors, often leaving our conference. College sailing also has equal amounts of regattas towards women's and coed teams with every weekend including a regatta for each.
We do have try-outs in the fall that are typically for sailors who are not already in contact with recruiment or have little sailing experience. Those who have reached out and have significant sailing experience will automatically be placed on the race team at the beginning of the year
