Guide and Porter Salary
Price for trekking depends on many issues: requirements of the client, trekking area, size of the group etc. As an experienced guide I am always keen to keep my clients happy. I also try and keep the trekking expenses as little as possible. Additionally your costs will include my insurance, which is around 30 USD per month (based on 2014). The rates for my service as a guide are lower than rates of the trekking agencies as I do not have same expenses as them (e.g.: rent, internet services, salary of many employees involved in organising a package).
By choosing to trek with an independent guide you can be sure that the guide has a proper equipment and transparent payment which contributes directly to my family. As a self employed guide I care for all the gear myself and in case of engaging a potter or other staff I make sure they have proper gear and are treated fair.
If you decide to trek with me you could decide if you would like to have a 'daily all including' rate (my salary, price of the meals and accommodation). Alternatively you could decide to pay only my salary and pay for accommodation and meals by yourself.
I always try to adjust the costs during the trekking, however I have to adjust my costs every year due to the changing market situation. Therefore please feel free to contact me via email, facebook or phone to discuss the prices/ packages for each trek individually.
In case of a camping trek we would discuss different options. The general rule is that camping treks are cheaper in a group of 4-10 people than only with 1-2 people.
Additional costs will apply for:
Hotel on arrival to Kathmandu. Over the years I worked with many businesses in Nepal. I can help to arrange your accommodation before and after the trek in or around Kathmandu if you prefer a quiet place. Please let me know of the style of accommodation you prefer and I would recommend you a nice place to stay.
Trekking gear is expensive in some countries and Kathmandu is a shopping mecca for trekking things. In Thamel you can find international reliable trekking brands with original quality (e.g.: North Face, Millet or Nepali brand Sherpa). On the other side you get an affordable products which may last only for a few treks. I am happy to do necessary shopping with you, help you bargaining and make sure that you pay a fair price in the local shops. I am also happy to help you with a souvenir shopping after the trek.
Transportation to the start of the trail and from the end of the trek you will cover the transport costs for you and for me (the price for Nepali is usually less then for tourists). Land transportation could be done by local or tourist bus, minivans, private vehicles or jeeps (4 WD). Current prices for the land transport may vary between 12–120 USD per person (please confirm details in advance). In some cases only jeep or aircraft transportation is possible. Prices for the flight may range from 150-250 USD with a regular flight or they are much higher if you decide to charter an aircraft yourself.
Extras during the trek may include things like chocolate, fruits or alcohol of which the prices grow with the altitude gained on the trek. Any treats during the trek will be your own expense and will not be included in a daily rate (if you decide to have an 'all included' daily rate). It might be a good idea to take a few snacks from your home country or to buy them in Kathmandu.
Guide Tip are welcome :-) Like in other countries in Nepal tips are welcomed as a token of love and as a gesture of satisfaction from the guests. If you are happy after your trek, satisfied with service and appreciate the work of your guide and porters - please feel free to express your gratitude :-)
