Project : - Newsprint mileage Calculator.
Target : Prepare best method to calculate web-offset Newsprint (NP) reel mileage calculator
Time line : 2018-2023
Online real time calculator for Pre production - Newsprint reels to schedule for production by getting number of copies in press reel room, and for Post production - to compute closing total Net weight of balance reel as well as diameter. This program works based on input data - Grammage (GSM), Diameter of reel and Paper thickness;
From below calculator..
Input ♦ Diameter of reel and ♦Paper thickness - we get >> ♦ Length of web with input with product length >> ♦ reel mileage in number of copies.
Input ♦ Grammage (GSM) data and ♦Reel width in addition to above we get ♦ Net weight of reel.
Paper thickness is inversely propositional to length of reel, when caliper/thickness increase length of web decrease and this can be verify using below program. As we discussed earlier in home page, diameter, paper thickness and length of web can be derived from single variant - 'RPM' of NP reel using our calculator.
Following are features of this project work Press Newsprint Reel room calculator;
Using Diameter and paper thickness we get length of web.
From length data by formula we get copies and net weight of reel using GSM data.
By using add button, we can consolidate total - copies and net weight of reels.
Using total print order data, this calculator predicts NP weight required.
By using Calc. button, this program computes predictions for Balance reel diameter and net weight.
Finally Strip / Flat waste finder is also added to this module.
Example 1;-
I am having balance reel (BR) NP Soucy with diameter Ø 755mm for production of 8550 copies;
What will be the weight of BR @ 755 mm diameter?
Is this BR enough for production 8550 cps ?
If yes, what will be the remaining BR diameter and weight?
Can we analyse/calculate mileage of this Soucy reel (pages/kg or sq.m/kg) ?
Is it possible to get paper thickness for this NP reel Soucy?
Can we accumulate multiple reels for bulk production ?
Like this we have lot of queries in our day today production, and solution for above questions is solved by bellow program;-
- First task (Basic reel details) is to find paper thickness of BR diameter Ø 755mm >> so we move with same NP reel (Soucy) full reel (FR) for paper thickness calculation (Need only FR diameter and length from reel label). By following below steps in animated gif image we get the result [Note: below image is full reel FR Soucy label]
As per reel label for 1016mm diameter and 76 ɥm thickness reel - gross weight is 628 kg (as per label) and derived Net weight from program is 617 kg - with 11 kg difference (unused brown waste). If this result give more deviation then we have to check for grammage accuracy (input GSM may be wrong) using this link;
This calculator can also predict the balance reel diameter and weight that provide additional information to press operators.
Example 2;-
Total Print order = 52350 => Predicted total Net weight = 1584.6 kg ; with calculated Paper thickness - 66.1 micron
[based on reel label web length 12116m and diameter Ø 1013mm, 40GSM] from above calculator;
Closing status/result: predicted BR => Diameter 709mm with weight 327.1 kg
Following work is practically tested and proved method of the functionality of our program with Machine data.
Closing BR dia Ø - 707mm by m/c,
Calculated dia Ø - 709mm as per program
± ~ 5mm tolerance
This calculator is extended to compute flat waste >> input - diameter and paper thickness data in this module 1016mm dia 76 thickness >> provide height of damage from the surface 13 mm >> output result flat white waste 15.8 kg . Before stripping off the white flat we can derive weight using this calculator>> easy and best module in this program.

This is a simplified calculator and may not be suitable for all applications. It is recommended to consult with a printing expert for any critical calculations.
This calculator can be implemented using various technologies, including:
Web application: This allows users to access the calculator through a web browser.
Mobile application: This provides a more convenient way to access the calculator on the go.
Desktop application: This is ideal for users who need to perform calculations regularly.
From this work we came to conclusion that NP - Diameter data and Caliper (paper thickness) data are most important information and can be marked by the side of every balance reel (BR) like example 550/64.8 (Dia/Caliper) after completion of production, then it is easy for mileage calculation for further process. We feel that this two data part (Diameter & Caliper) give more control over calculation on Newsprint mileage and also it is used to find strip/flat waste, easy to collect data as well as to analysis more deeper. Recently from latest machines Reel RMP is enough to compute both diameter and caliper of Newsprint reels which gives finally paper mileage by formula.
RPM reel rotation per minute -> give diameter of reel -> paper thickness -> length of web -> weight of reel in real time.
So as result - analysing RPM of Newsprint reel in depth programming give accurate NP mileage in News paper industry.
