Organization. The conference is organized by the GTA research group. For any question about the conference, please contact Dario Ascari, Federico Berlai, Sam Corson, Matteo Vannacci. If you are interested in giving a talk at the conference, please let us know.
Venue. The conference will be held at the Plentzia Marine Station PiE-UPV/EHU, Areatza Pasealekua, 48620 Plentzia – Bizkaia, Basque Country (Spain). The building is situated on the seaside in Plentzia, around 15km from the center of Bilbao. In order to reach Plentzia from the city center, the easiest way is to take the metro. Once at the metro station in Plentzia, you can reach the building with a 15-20 minutes walk along the river, or you can take the bus in front of the metro station (bus 3499 - from Estación Metro, Txipio to Puente Busterri, Plencia).
Accommodation. We will be able to book (convenient) accommodation for some of the participants at the Colegio Mayor Unamuno, located near the center of Bilbao. If you are interested, please specify that in the application form. Limited financial support for accommodation is available for young participants.
Additional talk. On Wednesday 26th at 12:00 in the seminar room of the Mathematics Department (note the different location) there will be an additional talk.
Matteo Vannacci
In search of new HJI groups
A just infinite group is an infinite group without infinite proper quotients. A group is said to be hereditarily just infinite (HJI) if all of its finite index subgroups are just infinite. A classical classification theorem of Grigorchuk-Wilson states that a residually finite just infinite group is either: (a) a branch group or (b) an HJI group. Branch groups have been extensively studied (e.g. Grigorchuk group), but HJI groups remain a very mysterious class. In this talk, I will report on some recent work on the search for new HJI subgroups of iterated wreath products in product action.
This talk is organised in collaboration with the Algebra Seminar of the Mathematics Department at UPV/EHU.
