Preface: All Men Are Brothers is a compelling and unique collection of Gandhi's most trenchant writings on nonviolence, especially in the context of a post-nuclear world. This compendium, which reads like a traditional book, is drawn from a wide range of his reflections on world peace. Through this book, readers can have some idea of the workings of Gandhiji’s mind, the growth of his thoughts and the practical techniques which he adopted. These selections from his speeches and writings were compiled with great care and discrimination by Shri Krishna Kripalini. It is a selection from the writings of Mahatma Gandhi compiled for the UNESCO, for presenting in one handy volume, the life and thoughts of the Mahatma as told in his own words. The Navajivan Trust approached the UNESCO for permitting the issue of a cheap edition in English and in Indian languages also, with Dr. Radhakrishnan's Introduction. The UNESCO has kindly granted us this permission. Hence this issue of the book has been published for Indian readers.

Preface: Gandhiji believed that character building on the part of every single individual is the only sure foundation for nation building. Students of his philosophy of life who would like to have an idea of his rule for self-culture would do well first of all to read Appendices A and B in this book (pages 65-88). They should then pass on to a study of From Yeravda Mandir - Ashram Observances and of the present volume, and at last dip into Appendix C (pages 89-92), which is Gandhiji's last will and testament in so far as Ashram life is concerned. It is a remarkable coincidence that like From Yeravda Mandir this book shares with The Pilgrim's Progress the rare distinction of having been written in prison.

Preface: In search of the Supreme (Volume 1, 2 & 3) was written by Gandhiji. God has been the object of search for the best of human minds since the dawn of civilization. These souls have not been the monopoly of any chosen people, but have belonged to the whole humanity. The paths they have trodden and the trails they have blazed have been many and varied. Several of them have recorded their experiences in their own words while, experiences of others have been narrated by their disciples. Lives of these pioneers in the realm of spirit have been characterized by a high degree of divine qualities, described in detail in Canto XVI of the Bhagavad-Gita. Gandhiji belonged to this race of immortals. Bhagavad-Gita was for Gandhiji a book of reference. He found it of great help and called it his Kamadhenu. It offers an excellent synthesis of the very best that is in Hindu spiritual thought and culture. Questions such as the nature of God, his relationship with the universe and the destiny of the individual soul have been expounded at length in the Lord's song aptly called the Song Celestial. Discourses of Gandhiji on the Gita, therefore, find a place of honour in the present collection. To the earnest reader who seeks answers to questions such as, the purpose of human life, how to live and conduct oneself in this world, etc., and guidance will be found in the pages of these three volumes.

No of pages: 71

Preface: Gandhiji wrote these chapters while he was confined in the Aga Khan Palace at Poona during 1942-1944. As the manuscript indicates he began to pen them on 27.08.1942 and completed them on 18.12.1942. To him the subject was so important that he hesitated to release them at once and took time to go through them again and again till the treatment was to his full satisfaction. He intended to correct these chapters if his ever-growing experience so dictated. The original was written in Gujarati and Gandhiji got it translated in Hindi and English by Dr. Sushila Nayar under his own guidance. He also went through both the translations to give them the final touches. The reader can therefore take the translation as Gandhiji’s own rendering of what he wished to convey to his people and to the world on the vital question of health.

Preface: Part I and II of the book deal with Gandhiji as a law student and as a practising barrister. Part III of the book contains the political trials of Gandhiji in South Africa and in India. Here Gandhiji appears in the role of a Satyagrahi, as a civil resister of unjust laws. Part IV of the book discusses the role of lawyers in the Satyagraha struggle. It also gives an account of the farcical political trials held in the Punjab in 1919 during the Martial Law regime, when several innocent persons were sentenced by special courts to death or life-imprisonment on the flimsiest of evidence. Part V deals with Gandhiji's views on sundry and miscellaneous topics having some bearing on the subject of this book. Appendix II contains select thoughts of Gandhiji on the law and the lawyers. Appendix III contains the text of the speech of the late B. N. Gokhale, ex-judge of the Bombay High Court at the symposium organized by the Bombay Branch of the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi on 1-7-1963 in which he dealt with Gandhiji's legal philosophy. Appendix IV contains Gandhiji's application dated 16-11-1891 for enrolment as an advocate of the Bombay High Court. Appendix V contains Gandhiji's certificate of being called to the Bar by Inner Temple. Appendix VI contains the certificate from Mr. W. D. Appendix VIII is a letter from the eminent judge and jurist Lord Denning to the Editor informing him that the Inner Temple which had disbarred Gandhiji in 1922 after his imprisonment during his first civil disobedience movement in India and had restored his name on its rolls shortly after India attained freedom had honoured Gandhiji's memory by unveiling in 1984 his special portrait in the library of the Inner Temple. Last is the glossary of Indian terms used in the book with their English translation. This book has served its purpose to inspire the readers, be he a lawyer or a layman, with the belief that the vocation of the lawyer is an honourable vocation requiring the highest standards of rectitude, integrity and uprightness, and that its practice is in no way inconsistent with the pursuit of truth.

Preface: The Way to Communal Harmony is a compilation of Gandhiji’s reflections on certain problems which divide mankind. In reading through this selection of Gandhiji’s writings and speeches, one is struck again and again by the passion and sincerity with which he pleaded the cause of better understanding among individuals and communities. He came to politics from an ethical urge. Quite early in life, he realized that men will not feel secure till the physical causes of conflict—insufficiency of food, shelter and other necessities—have been removed. Neither will they feel secure till the mental and moral strength of the individual has been developed. Many of the most significant thoughts of Gandhiji on the way to achieve individual and social harmony have been compiled in this single volume.

ISBN No:978-81-7229-210-2

Preface: This is an abridged edition of the volume To The Students published by the Navajivan Trust in 1949. It contained in full all the matter by Gandhiji relating to students, and was arranged chronologically Valuable as such a volume is, it was felt that it might be useful also to have a smaller book which will put before the student world concisely and systematically all that Gandhiji had to say to it, and in his own words. This present book is the outcome. The arrangement in it is necessarily topical. But dates are given under each quotation to show when it was written or uttered. The quotations are limited per force to words addressed by Gandhiji specifically to students. A cursory glance at the outline of contents shows that Gandhiji touched on every aspect of a student s life. It also reveals that his greatest emphasis was on Religion, Character and Service. He knew the great importance of youth, and more especially of studentship, and saw the vital need to direct its perplexities, its enthusiasm and energy along lines which brings the greatest happiness to it and to the nation and the world.

ISBN No: 978-81-7229-078-8

Preface: The present book relates to the earlier formative period when Gandhiji revolted from the prevailing system of education and sought in various ways to substitute it by educational practices it by educational practices more in harmony with his own conception of the function of education. To understand adequately the Basic Education scheme which he formulated in 1937 it is essential to go back to the earlier period where we can see it in origin and growth. The present book is a necessary companion volume to the one on Basic Education. An attempt has here been made to arrange the writings in such a way that the reader finds for himself the evolution of Gandhiji's ideas in regard to Education. Section I deals with his period of revolt; Section II with experimentation, and Section III and the others following with formulation of principles. It is hardly necessary to say that these sections are by no means rigid, for even in his period of revolt and experimentation we find Gandhiji formulating principles.

Preface: In this book the reader can find Gandhiji’s speeches from his heart on various occasions in the course of thirty years of the maturest period of his life. Anyone who desires to understand what sort of a man the Father of the Nation was, must read this book. One may not want to learn anything about religion that is not in our Shastras or in other religious books. But here is a facet of the mind of a great man we love and to whom the nation is grateful. It has a value over and above a book of religious instruction.
