Pacific Cultural Trees and Community Day
Focusing on the COFA (Compact of Free Association) Community on Hawai’i Island: Marshallese, Kosraeans, Pohnpeians, Chuukese, Yapese, and Palauans.
In partnership with the University of Hawaiʻi, Kaulunani Urban Forestry Program, Niu Now, and the Master Gardeners, we organized and hosted the Heritage Plants and Community Day. Pacific Cultural Trees and Community Day. The event took place at 875 Komohana Street, at the UHM extension building. Here, we distributed breadfruits and sugarcane, and we shared knowledge about heritage plants such as coconut, Kava, breadfruit, and sugarcane. The UH Ant Lab, Master Gardeners, and cultural experts were present to provide information on how to treat ants and care for plants. This event was an opportunity to provide trees, share resources, and connect with the community. All of which are vital to the ultimate goal of the project, enhancing community resilience.

Event Goal: To host a collaborative community event that shares vital knowledge about growing and caring for heritage plants such as breadfruit (ʻulu), coconut (niu), and sugarcane (kō). The event blends scientific best practices with deep cultural wisdom, featuring expert-led resource stations and hands-on demonstrations to empower the community.

The Pacific Youth Empowerment for Success (PacYES) conference aims to motivate, inspire, and inform Pacific Islander high school students on Hawaiʻi Island about career opportunities, college preparedness, and community readiness. Rooted in the understanding that one’s culture is an important aspect of developing a positive self-identity, PacYES is led by role models in the Pacific Islander community and college students from UH Hilo, Hawaiʻi Community College, and other institutions.
