Mt. Kilmanjaro is the world's largest free standing mountain, meaning it's not a part of a larger mountain range. it is composed of three main points, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Of these three volcanic cones, Kibo is the only that is still alive and dormant. (23)
The glaciers that stand on and near these peaks are an amazing part of this mountain, since it is so close to the equator at around 3 degrees latitude. The white color of these glaciers allows them to reflect much of the heat from the sun that hits them, due to the albedo effect. The loss of these galciers could cause the mountain to warm up significatnly as there would be nothing for the sunlight to reflect off of, the rays would directly hit the mountian and warm it up. (24)
The loss of the galciers on Mt. Kilimnanajro has become visible to the naked eye in recent years, what was once an ice capped mountain is quickly becoming grey and barren. This loss affects many factors on Mt. Kiliminjaro, it leads to a loss of fresh water for the mountain which affects the communities that relies on that source of water to survive. The ecosystems are also affected by the loss of the glaciers as this could cause a major climate change on the mountain. (24)
