Coaching Philosophy

Adapted from the LA84 Foundation Cross Country Coaching Manual

We believe that athletes should learn that the most important kind of success comes from their personal improvement, giving their maximum effort, being willing to take risks, and striving to do their best.  When we can train hard to develop our ability, give our best effort in competition, and show the will to push ourselves beyond our limits, we will be successful.

Along with focusing on individual and team success, we do have a lot of fun.  The kind of fun we have is the pride, satisfaction, and fulfillment an athlete experiences from improving his or her strength, speed, and skill after hours of training and practice.  It is the thrill of setting a new personal record in competition. It is the fun of feeling good about oneself and celebrating the success of a teammate or the team as a whole.

As coaches, it is our responsibility to create an environment that nurtures pride, confidence, courage, respect, responsibility, trust, caring, and leadership.  We try to reflect and reinforce these attributes in our own attitudes, words, actions, and behaviors. We strive to instill values in our athletes such as sacrifice, dedication, accountability, and self confidence along with such virtues as good sportsmanship, teamwork, respect for opponents, mental toughness, and persistence when faced with adversity.  We believe that these character traits can help lead young athletes toward successful, fulfilling lives long after their high school athletic careers have ended.
